wow that DOES look like vice city!!!!
first from google (http://www.gamershell.com/hellzone_Playstation_2_ The_Simpsons_Hit_and_Run.shtm)
I have rented this and beat it. Here's a rundown:
AMAZING ART. The level design is great. There's 3 parts of the map you visit over 7 levels. Each part of the map is huge, it's maybe as big as two islands from GTA3. On the 7th level, one of the maps gets transformed into a Halloween theme and everything is overhauled, so technically the game has 4 levels. All the buildings, interiors, people, and cars get overhauled into a Halloween theme too - it's really sweet.
I really love all of the artistic aspect of this game. In the city you can see basically every part of the city ever shown in the show. The graphics are great on the maps, on the characters, and on the vehicles. BTW there are like 50 vehicles or something, and each one is from the show.
If you're a big fan of the show this game is so great because when you see a character and hear his voice, see a part of the city, or see a vehicle, you will probably remember which episode it came from. Also, theres things called "Gags" where you walk up and press an action button, and something will happen from an episode and you'll only get it if you have seen the episode. (Example, pressing button at the Kamp Krusty flag lowers the flag and the Camp Bart flag goes up).
Everything else of this game pretty much sucks. Each character has like 5 taunts and says the same crap over and over - I turned the taunts off. The missions are FUCKING TERRIBLE. Everything is like a "Fed EX" mission, you just go and get something and bring it back, and it's all fucking timed. Their idea of having a harder level is to have the exact same fucking mission you had before but give you less time. The goddamn last 4 levels ARE THE EXACT SAME, NO CHANGE, ALL YOU DO IS GET LESS TIME. There is basically only 3 mission types:
1) Go collect stuff within the time.
2) Race somebody to a location.
3) Smash up a car till it blows in the time.
But to be "tricky" they like to mix it up by combining types to make the mission longer. Ex: Smash up a car and collect what it drops within the time, or go get something then race to a location, or during a mission they will randomly have you race a car or outrun a cop car before you can continue to the location you're going to. I was so pissed that the mission scripters believed they were making the game more challenging by just having timed missions. The game would have been more better if you could be relaxed and travel as you wished, but you're either always forced to talk to someone or you're timed.
The game is like GTA in that you can walk where you want and drive cars (the car driving isn't bad), but the story tries to be non-linear though its linear at the same time because they always want you to go someplace. It's like a neverending mission but with checkpoints.
So basically this game has amazing art and really sweet things to catch if you're a fan of the show, but the missions are repetitive, unimaginative, sometimes plain fucking retarded, and suck a lot. This game is really only worth a rental, and only if you're a fan of the show could you tolerate the terrible missions. If I wasn't a fan of the show I would have smashed up the disc within the first few hours. The game probably has about 8-10 of playing time in it, and even though you can collect costumes and regular cars/secret vehicles using coins, it still doesn't have much replay value. I didn't feel like playing it again after I beat it anyway.
