the main problem i had with movie maker was it crashed every 2 seconds, sometimes wouldnt let me extract my videos, and i just couldnt get enough accuracy with effects.
i much prefer premiere i just need to figure it all out

I used WMM2 but It BLOWS, actually the editing part is okay but all the other junk is,... well junk.
I heard that the audio file is what's creating the problem. You need to use one that is capable with WMM(forgot the format but I do believe it has something to do with M$)
I tried Adobe Premiere and I'm disappointed. Adobe makes great products, just not this one.

not the face,
im using adobe premiere now, i rate it me, its better than moviemaker coz of the crashing n the fact that it ahs loads more features, to do a fade you want to select the little effects tab next to your project tab in the project window, ive noticed this post is pretty old now, so u probably know this by now

yea, im not that keen on premiere that much, i thought it was good at first while i was testing it out with small clips, but when making a video unless your computer is over flowing with memory (unlike mine) it just takes so long to do anything. but it was good to do a whole video with out the program crashing once :D

it does take ages and a lot of space innit, ive done a new thread asking for help with premiere, which the best compression is on the list, ive used all the options in the divx 5 codec, n the cinepak n that , but it comes out really poor quality

what are you using at the mo, can you recommend any other good editing software?, ive been using that honestech video editor 7.0, i like all the stuff it does, but when it comes to playing back what you have put on the storyboard it crashes everytime.

Premiere isn't the best video editing software, but I still is better than many of the other ones out there. It is also far above all the consumer ones that many people probably use to make their videos.
If you want something more advanced than premiere, then you'll be getting into:
Avid
Mediastudio
Finalcut Pro
etc.
However, premiere is all you need for this style of video editing and has a small learning curve compared to ones like Avid.
Compression:
My last video, coming out of Premiere, was 4gigs, then was thrown into after effects. Rendering from after effects it was then 8gigs.
I then threw the video into a program dedicated to compression only. I would never compress anything out of the same program you edited with.
For this video, since most of the people viewing it don't like big files, and want a format that they have standard, I just used Microsofts WMV Encoder. VHS Settings. There are better compressors out there, but this ones is one click compression. Done, pack it up. Upload. My video was 29.97fps mp3 audio, 6 minutes, and perfect video for only like 46 megs. I could of made it smaller, but it starts to lose some quality and I wanted my video perfect.

ok let me help you out! to do a fade what needs to happen is you have to place one clip ( or some black video ) on top of another then use the opacity rubberband to set the desired fade type then preview to see what it looks like. if the opacity rubberband dosent automaticly show up when u place a clip ( or black video ) on top of another then click the button that looks like two squares with a line going through them diagonally ( it's on the left side right where the begining of the video starts ) then it will show up. basically u have total control over all fadeing action u can create any kind of fade u need, it's great man. so if u need more help i'll help i LOVE ADOBE PREMIERE

I use Vegas 6.0 which seems to work fine, and it has a user-friendly interface for those new to the program.
