To begin with; some advice: Only play this game if you have the time to play it from start to finish in one sitting. The cutscenes are exquisite, the plot indulging. It would be an insult to Mr. Kojima himself if you did not treat it as a film.

Gameplay:

Minor improvements around the whole board have allowed for a much smoother type of game. New features like camoflauge soon become instinct and life in the jungle is very clean and easy to handle, some might say too easy. The most antcipated part of the gameplay, CQC, is an infortunate letdown. CQC is not at all as intuitive as we would have hoped for and so all I ever particulaly use CQC for is standing behind guards and slitting their throats. A vast array of weapons and the longest and most enduring (but amazing) boss battle ever combine for a thrilling game that will grip you until the final phone call.

Sound:

Harry Gregson-Williams (The Rock etc) compser extroadinare creates yet another orignal score that should win best music to a game ahead of GTA:SA. Also the SFX is very realistic and provides for an amazing asian experience. But the trump card of this deck is the supreme Snake Eater. How they managed to copy James Bond and make it original is beyond belief. If you haven't heard the song give me your email, I'll send you £40 in the post today.

Storyline:

The cutscenes at the beginning of the game will be annoying if you are looking fo action, but if you want the whole experience and truly understand the MGS games then you will enjoy wtaching them. The story is extremely well written, I did not realise some things until the end (no i'm not stupid and didn't realise I played as Big Boss). But What struck me during the final 3 cutscens was how much they made me empathise with Snake, but also the respect I had for Ocelot. I sya no more but really this should have been a film.

Lifespan:

Snake vs. Monkey will make you comeback but not for more than a week. I have just finished my fourth outing and I still haven't see everything. Example, you can blow up armouries or food storages to cause soldiers to run out of ammo or eat raw food and get poisoned. That is depth. 6 months to a year.

Graphics: Not much of a change from MGS2 until you see the end chase scene. This sequence effervesces with an explosion of beauty so ravishing that it.... I could go on.

Overall:

I'd like to sit here and go "So good it gets 100%" but in reality the game has some flaws. At times it does look outdated and the CQC is a let down. But it is an essential game. You emote with characters and want to play more. It will change your life, if it doesn't then you clearly aren't a cospiracy fan. This game hooked we onto the MGS bandwagon oncemore when my doubts were high. Buy this game, Buy MGS2, MGS1, all the MSX games from te 80's and 90's in Japan.

The graphics in this game are perfect, like better than GT4's graphics.

I disagree i think they nailed the CQC as best as they possibly could, all the buttons are extremely tight. Started this game on normal, cause frankly easy is just rediculously easy on any metal gear game, and i found it to be pretty challenging.

Gameplay: Very fun, the beginning has quite alotm of stories, but they work well, it seems to cut straight to the action when you want to, except for one scene where you fall off a bridge etc. Boss battles are fun, except 'The Fear' i found him slightly boring. Yet this game offers one my three favourite boss battles of all time, 'The End', this boss took me an hour and three quarters' and is really intense and quite scary. The atmospehere is solid, and the jungle idea was ingenious. You actually have trouble seeing guards from time to time because of their camoflauge and stuff, so items such as thermal goggles, which you never really needed in other games, become incredibly useful in this one.

Sound:

Harry Gregson-Williams....nuff said.

Storyline: Cutscenes at the beginning annoyed me abit, but after an hour it really gets into the game. Cause people bitched about codec and video seqeucnes, they have been taken out a vast amount. The videos appear in good time, like right when you wanna cut from the action, which is good. The codec convos are still there, but you have to ring to find out info, they aren't enforced. I for one think this is game ios supposed to be half game half film, people who bitch about the stories really shouldnt be playing it, thats the type of game it is.

Graphics: I disagree with Max-E here as i think the graphics are of vast improvement, i went back, compared and compared etc. i found that metal gear 3 has great enhancments in terms of visual effects, for instance water, which is hard to recreate and fight sequences look solid and feel sorta real.

Its not about graphics but its about the games feel so, the controlelr vibrations work really well inthis game, if ihad dolby surround this game would feel like ur right in the heat of the action. The vibrations get more suddan and powerful as you get into tighter spots, you can hear and sometimes feels Snakes heart beating with tension, it really did amaze me.

Lifespan: Clocked it in 15 horus on normal, but i dont consider that finished, once icomplete extreme and European Extreme, thats when i have finished it.

Extras: Snake vs Apes is clever addition, with the monkeys from ape escape being ruinaways that you have to capture: I found this game dull and unnecessery,i would have preferred more cutscenes or some VR missions(but its the 60's so VR probably wasn't invented........ whatever)

They'll probably add some form of VR missions or extra little goodies when it comes to Xbox and PC.

Ugg... I cannot believe you are going to wait so long just for some slightly improved textures and something similar to VR missions. Olin, if you would just play the game on PS2, you would realize how awsome it is and how graphics aren't always everything.

Just give it a rental and play for about 20 minutes, not skipping any cutscenes. If you absolutely cannot stand the textures, fine. Your loss..

Well all i'm saying is that's a long time to wait for such an amazing game. Especially when you think about the minor improvements that they might make to the PC and Xbox versions.

Exactly, i wish i had patience when it came to byuing games, but idont.

Besides the only graphical improvements ican the Xbox will do is lighting, maybe soften the visuals a bit. But this is only cause the lighting effects in Halo are so good.

Either way, if i had the choice between a ps2 game and axbox one, i would buy xbox, of course iwould need an xbox first.

I agree with Piggus though, give it a rent.

What does Halo have to do with MGS3?

Renting it would just be a waste of money.

MGS substance blows. Such a fucked up story. Wierd ass camera angles, and overall pretty boring. (I hate that fuckin old retard the end, it took me like 2 hours to find the fucker then he shoots me and I wake up like 30 mins away in a cell, then go back, get shot faster, then go back and save, then when I loaded he shot me right away in a movie! So lame.

MGS doesnt have anything to do with Halo, i never said it did. I said that i cant see the graphics improving for the Xbox version of mgs3, the only graphics isee improving are lighting visuals, and possibly soften looking graphics.

This is only because isaw how good lighting was in Halo.

Xbox has 64MB of RAM (not including the virtual memory on the hard disk) and PS2 has 31MB. They could quite easily add some better textures along with crisper lighting effects and such if they wanted to.

What I mean is that there are some great touches, and the intricate detail is improve but on an overall scale I feel it has pushed the PS2 to its limits and it will take a PS3 to breathe fresh, shockingly good graphics to the MGS series.

As in all the MGS games, its an experience. whenever i sit down to play an MGS game, i feel instantly involved and you really feel for the characters.

The music is also so very fitting, in MGS2:SoL all the music is spot on perfection. No change in MGS3:SE. From the moment i power on my PS2 and the Snake Eater song comes on, i know im in for an experience.

My score 10/10 Pure perfection in video game form.

Yeah, the caution music makes me so tense, and when your in the last abse part area, it has some wicked James Bond licks randomly put in the music, i think its great.

I beat the game yesterday. One of the best PS2 games there is and i'm definitely going to play through it a couple of times more.

The fact that there is no radar doesn't really bother me, however I did missed it at some points. But I got used to it really quick. No radar actually makes you look around more then you did in the previous MGS' (I never played MGS2 much though), and in those games you just looked at the radar while sneaking around. You pay more attention to your surroundings. It's great.

The camera is slightly annoying at some times. Especially when running in the camera direction. At every few steps you take you gotta look if there isn't a gaurd around. That's the only time I actually missed the radar.

But enough about the bad things about the game. There are just to many good things in MGS SE to mention. The graphics, story, characters, environment etc.. are just a few good points. And the game has probably one of the most shocking endings ever, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't beaten the game yet.

Bottom line: A must have for every PS2 owner!!

If ur on a normal setting or easier you have a motion detector and a snoar, i dont think u do on hard, or extreme.

Extreme is so much fun.

03-26-2005, 06:59 AM
I beat the game on normal. I think i'll start all over today on Hard. Extreme is a little too hard for now, because I still don't know all the basics of CQC. But i'm definitely planning on beating the game on Extreme though.

And ofcourse the biggest challenge is beating the game without being seen on the hardest mode. If I get that then that'll probably be my second best gaming achievment after beating FFX without using the Sphere Grid. You get special camouflage or something when you beat MGS SE without being seen don't you?

OkComputer
03-26-2005, 09:48 AM
i think u have to do it in 5 hours aswell.
not kill anyone, you can also get the camo buy shooting all the frogs thatare are about, one in every area.

You wont believe how much harder european extreme is to extreme. Europeon is almost impossible.

I looked it up on gamefaqs. When you beat the game under the following requierments you get Infinity Face Paint. Which basicly grants you an infinite amount of ammunition as long as it is equipped.

Under 5 hours
0 kills
0 alerts
0 contines
0 Life meds used
under 20 injuries
under 25 saves
Absolutely No stealth camo or EZ gun, they count as special items.

These were tested by people on the "NORMAL" mode, so i'm not sure if it work with other difficulties.

Here are some faqs that tell you everything about it:
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/metal_gear _solid_3_ifp.txt
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/metal_gear _solid_3_no_alert_no_kill.txt

I got the European version and thought normal mode was already pretty hard. At least, with sneaking and all... I found it pretty easy to just rush into the enemy and start shooting like a mad man. But speaking in terms of sneaking it was pretty difficult. Well, at least MGS SE gives you a real challenge... unlike the majority of other games that are being released nowadays.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the best game I've ever played.

The infamous series is known for its cinematic gameplay, dramatic plot twists and intriging characters. I never really like games with too much cut scenes. I had the opinion 'I'm playing a game, not a movie'. How naive was I back then.

I put the game in my console, and pressed the rest button. I was going to play for an hour. The intro movie came straight from a real Bond movie, and I was pretty impressed. I started a new game, on normal (which was overal pretty easy). Everything starts with a flash back, what your asignment is, who you are, what you are. I was actually impressed about the story, it looks pretty cliché at first, but when the plot evolves you evolve too, and you'll realise this isn't your average 'save the world from eternal damnation' story.

Now, about the game. The first thing I noticed were the graphics. This has to be the most beautiful Playstation2 game up to date with spectacular reflections, jaw dropping environments and encredible effects.

The music and sound are equally terrific. An example: You're in the jungle, crawling through bushes. You have an enemy in sight, and you're sneaking behind him. The music is ambient. Too bad you didn't notice another enemy behind you. He spots you, and the alarm goes off. Immediately the music changes in a heart pounding classical beat that i[drags[/i] you in the game.

The gameplay is what you can expect from a 'tactical espionage action' game, and more. If you're dying for fast paced action, you'll better refrain from this title. Most of the times you'll spend your time hiding in the jungle, observing and eating. That's right, good ol' Snake has a stomach now and it needs to be filled occasionally. You're able to tranquilize the animals (snakes, birds, spiders, you name it) and keep them in 3 cages. That way, they won't be rotten when you eat them.
If you just kill your pray (or obtain fruit) it can be rotten when it spends a long time in your backpack. If you eat it, you might me poisened, and you'll have to cure yourself. This brings us to the next new aspect when it comes to gameplay. The jungle is a dangerous place, and when you have cuts, gunwounds, fractures, etc. you can't just ignore it. Konami got rid of the health packages from the previous games, and made an entirely new system in which you can treat your injuries. It's an aweomse adition, and adds realism to the game.

MGS3: SE features some of the most memorable bosses I ever witnessed in a game. A in-bees-covered-man, a hundred year old sniper, a man with millions of volts in his body, you name it.
They all require different techniques to attack them and are all fun and hard persons to kill.

Words can't describe this game. I'm going to end like I started. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the best game I've ever played.

Ditto! When i first played it, it made me feel like i was snake, and i loved the sniper fight with the end, it last 3 hours when i first did it! The first time i played it through, it took me 22 hours, but the fastest time i've done it in was 10 hours! So the five hour target may be do-able!:D
