Hi, I'm new to the forums and have an idea I wanted to go over with you guys. I know it's probably just wishful thinking, but I thought I'd ask the experts. Is there any way to load the map from GTA:SA into Vice City for the PC? I'm not talking about cars, missions, player skins or anything, just the basic map, so there'd be no new features, but we would be able to explore SA before it comes out.

If someone could extract the map from the PS2 version, and convert it to the same format the PC uses for map files, wouldn't it be just like adding a new area like any other map mod?

I assume that one, sure-fire way of doing it would be to build the SA maps by scratch as a VC mod, using GTA:SA as a design, but this would be too long winded, but is'nt there a short cut? Could any of the building models be lifted from the PS2 version and converted? How about textures?

There has to be a way to try GTA:SA without waiting for them to port it!!!!

I know I've got a little carried away, but I'm desperate to play this game and so are lots of others. I'm prepared to give up food and sleep if necessary. Constructive feedback will be gratefully received.

Not possible (or atleast not yet)

Vice City's limits are tiny compared to SA's, you simply wouldn't be able to fit SA's map into the space VC allows. VC's limits are hard coded into the exe, which would make it VERY difficult to change.

Also, no-one has made modding tools for SA yet. So we couldn't extract the map files to put into vice city.

Tnx MP. I thought I might have been clutching at straws. I heard that it was the same engine and assumed it would be do-able based on that alone. Thanks for taking the time to answer though.

I hope that when San Andreas comes out on PC, someone makes a mod similar to GTA: Liberty City. That is, Vice City but with all the new features of San Andreas.

What about combining Liberty City and Vice City using SA's engine?

BobbyD, don't get confused. San Andreas, Vice City, and Liberty City all run on the GTAIII engine. It's just that the engine has been expanded for Vice City, and San Andreas. So yes, it IS possible to put San Andreas map into the Vice City version of the GTAIII engine, but it would be very difficult. Like Mouldy Punk said, the map limits are hard coded into the exe (which is the only part of the engine that's not open-source, as far as I know), and currently no-one can open any 3d models from San Andreas. By the time any of this will be possible, the PC version will be out. For now, I suggest you get the PS2 version (if you don't have a PS2, then an emulator might not go astray, but you would have a difficult time running it, plus the illegality of it).

But wouldnt it be possible to load the Liberty City and Vice City maps into the PC version of San Andreas? That would be cool...

yeah, i was thinking like... SA, LC, and VC connected somehow...or like when you go in LC in SA to St. Marco's Bistro..yeah....like fly off so far from tha map, and then comes up a new city, OR place long bridges.....

That would be possible, but it (again) would involve extending the map limits. Possible, nonetheless. One could place Liberty City north of Las Venturas (place a turnoff from the Julius Thru Way connected to a bridge connected to the southern tip of Stanton Island) and Vice City east of Los Santos (place a bridge in Playa Del Seville connected with Vice City Airport). I can picture that... But that may be too difficult to design (bridges, I mean). So maybe going by plane would do well.
