View Full Version : To clear up the PS2 compatability issue
.:Mouldy Punk:.
10-26-2004, 03:54 PM
Although SA is a PS2 game, PS2's with the model number 39001 may have problems. Not definatly. Some 39001 PS2's have glitchy sound, messed up graphics or just get a disc read error. We don't know why this is and we don't know if there is a fix for it and we don't know what Sony or Rockstar are going to do about it. I'm am VERY sure that they are well aware of the problem by now.
All other model PS2's don't seem to be having problems from what I've heard. This doesn't mean you are "safe" if your PS2 isn't a 39001, but you have a better chance of playing it.
Please stop the threads about PS2's compatability as it is only 39001's that have an issue (as far as we are aware)

When were "39001" models released?
Just to clarify. Thanks for the heads up.
.:Mouldy Punk:.
10-26-2004, 03:58 PM
They were either the first model or one of the first models made. Alot of PS2's that old are busted anyway, worn out.
lufcfan
10-26-2004, 03:59 PM
SCPH-39001 are V7 consoles. Basically, you're talking maybe 24-18 months back. Other V7 consoles have the numbers 39003 and 39005. Why the 39001 are having problems but the others aren't, I have no idea about that one... :)
.:Mouldy Punk:.
10-26-2004, 04:01 PM
Me neither, I just know what I have found by looking through other GTA forums. Alot of people are having problems with the 39001's, not other models or that era though.

Those were SCPH-30001 - I am a member of a PS2 technical forum you see :)

It's very strange - anyway I have a 39003 so I should be OK. Maybe Sony used some different encoder chips on those consoles???

Lol I have a 30001 model, oh crap, is going to work? I have never had a disc read error on any PS2 games, however, I have had a disc read error on some DVD movies, am I safe?

mine is written at the back model 50004, is it ok?

10-26-2004, 04:19 PM
So its ONLY that model that won't work? I have a 35001. Or do you mean that the 39001 and earlier won't work right? That would suck so so bad, id cry forever.
lufcfan
10-26-2004, 04:29 PM
It's just the 39001 - not earlier. 5000# series are V9/10 - you should be fine. If you're having DREs then you may have problems with the draw distances and details, and it may slow up your gameplay a fair bit...

I have a 30003 which I got on the release date - I'm supprised I didn't get a 30001... It's still going strong.. but it don't play DVD's to well... never had any problems with games though.

DREs aren't the be all and end all - a simple laser pot adjustment should cure them - best thing to do is just try the game and see :)
Major Payne
10-26-2004, 04:34 PM
How much are those new thin PS2's, I need a fallback plan incase my PS2 won't play it.
lufcfan
10-26-2004, 04:35 PM
In the UK they're about £100
I don't like them however, because all the components are on board so in a few years if problems arise, chances are you'll have to scrap the whole console, or get out your soldering iron for the simplest of repairs, whereas on the current one, it's a simple swap job :(
RollingStones
10-26-2004, 04:38 PM
Mine is a 50004 version. Is that good or bad??? I NEED TO KNOW THIS, SO PLEEEEEEAAAAAAASE REPLY!!!!!!!
lufcfan
10-26-2004, 04:42 PM
That's good - but the lasers can get weak very quickly and the Controller chips can blow - as they can on all 5000x series models :(
But, just keep the console clean and get a Romeo mod done and you'll be fine
Btw. A Romeo mod is where you take the prone LA6 controller chip from a 12v voltage which can blow both the chip & Laser coils when a scratched disc is played or the laser is dirty, to a 5v supply. This way, it doesn't blow and you can treat it like a 'normal' PS2... :)
RollingStones
10-26-2004, 04:47 PM
Many thanks dude. I'll look into it. I'm more calm now. I CAN PLAY SA!!!!! YAY!!!!
lufcfan
10-26-2004, 04:51 PM
No probs, glad to put you at ease :D
But to anyone with an SCPH-5000x console, you really should think about having the Romeo mod done - there are so many people with these consoles on the technical forum I am on with problems of blown lasers and LA chips because of scratched and dirty discs, which could be fixed so easily and cheaply. The LA can be replaced btw - but when prevention is better than cure, why go through not being able to play GTA for a week while the chip & laser are being replaced??? ;)

30001 just have very weak lasers. You may be perfectly fine but 95% of the time these consoles don't last out too well - I must say if you still have them and they are still good, you must really look after them... :)

Best lasers (KHS-400C type) and on the whole, by far the most reliable :)

Luckily I have warranty on my PS2. If SA don't work I'll go to the EB Games shop where I bought it and demand another console. And I WILL demand the SCPH-39003 version that lufcfan talks about. But I'm 97% sure that I won't have problems. The console is only 2-3 months old.

I was gettin worried cuz I had the 39003 version or somethin and I decided to get the new slim PS2 today. I didn't want any troubles when I play GTA. I traded in my PS2 ($100 store credit) then I traded in 5 useless games I probably will never play again, for $50 (10 bucks a game, I even traded in MADDEN 2003).
Was it worth it?

well what i'm trying to say is: if a game were to be made that not all ps2 models could handle, shouldn't there some kind of liability if it doesn't work? because a game that can't work would just be really stupid. i am also not saying that a system that was treated with no care should work (only well taken care of systems) anyone agree?

Sony already said that it would work on all PS2's, obviously that doesn't mean it's true.

If mine doens't work, I'll be furious. I'll do whatever I can to try to fix it, but that will be the last money Sony ever gets from me. I won't even buy any more PS2 games, I'll just wait until X-Box 2.

It works fine with San Andreas, but like most older PS2s, the blue backed discs that came out early on, which were actually CDs, no longer work, because of the cheap laser used in the original Playstation2s.

Well, it's definitely true - San Andreas does not work on SCPH-390001 PS2s. I was just at my friend's house an hour ago playing the game and it had sooo many graphical/sound glitches and disc-read errors I actually had to stop playing. And his PS2 just happens to be a SCPH-390001 model which is now ironic seeing that his PS2 is brand new, so it must be because of the system model.

im just curious to know what graphics problems people claim their having with the 39001's but noone seems to know. i havent had any glitchs graphically yet except once when i went over a hill and the ground got black but then got right but i had that happen to me a few times in gta 3 and gta vc that dont bother me.

I just got my copy of GTA San Andreas monday evening, and this afternoon(tues) when I go to play it start getting disc read errors. The game will load fine until it gets to the part where I can move around. As soon as I try and exit my house, disc read error. Try and go upstairs, disc read error. Wait 20 seconds, disc read error. What the hell? I checked the disk and it's spotless. No scratches, no dirt, no smudges. My PS2 has only had a few DREs in the past, on various games, but never this consecutively or frequently. What the dilly? I am severely pissed off and my warranty is voided cause I opened the thing. It's a SCPH-50001, and I bought it earlier this year. I tried recalibrating the laser voltage or whatever the guides on GameFAQs talk about, but it didn't do anything. Either I did it wrong or I didn't do anything because my screwdriver wouldn't turn the DVD screw on the right(because it was too far in). What the hell should I do?

Can the same cleaning disc be used both orginal DVD players and PS 2´s as well ? Or is there a cleaning disc for PS 2 only ?
And another thing, when was Playstation 2 released ?

This thread is funny. Everyone is getting a heart attack... maybe someone should make a poll for US gamers who have it, saying "did you have compatibility issues", then people can see the extent of the problems. Also, they shold then list their model...
Just a thought

AndyHogg, that answers your question.
This is what Sony say about Disk Read Errors:
If your PlayStation 2 is displaying the message "Disk Read Error", please troubleshoot with the following actions:
* Check that your disks are free from all dirt and scratches. If your disks have become dirty/dusty, please clean using a non-alcohol based cleaner e.g. The Official PlayStation Disk Wipes. If you are unable to find the official PlayStation disk wipe please check with your local retailer for specialist disk cleaning systems. When cleaning your disks please ensure you follow the instructions on the packaging. Disks should always be cleaned from the centre to the to the outer edge in a spoke motion.
* If you are still unable to play your disks, please try using the same disks on an alternative PlayStation. When testing your disks on another PlayStation, please ensure that you do not have any extra controllers or memory cards inserted. The test PlayStation should be the same configuration as your original PlayStation.
* Your PlayStation disks play perfectly on the alternative PlayStation. Please call the PlayStation Careline and a member of our team will be happy to help you further.
* Your PlayStation disks do not play on the alternative PlayStation. It would appear that your disks are at fault. If possible, please try an alternative disk of the same game in your PlayStation. If your disk seems to be the cause of the difficulties please arrange to replace the disks. We do offer a disk replacement scheme for Sony Computer Entertainment titles only.

Dammit... I have a 39001... Although I was playing for about 2 hours and had no trouble... I guess time will tell. I don't want to have to spend another $200 for a PS2 (I'd get the PStwo but it can't have a hard drive).

Heres a site to visit and see urself what things u got in ur PS2.
I got an SCPH-39004 and it always worked fine..
What model what trouble, hey that rhymz can u pass some vines? ;) (http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm)
And like the guy said, just clean ur PS2 from time to time.
I do: turn it off from the back, pull out everything all plugs and memory cards, controllers. (also games if u let them inside.)
then blow into the bottom raster open the back (where ur ps2 network adapter goes in) blow in extreme hard or get a vacuüm cleaner to suck from the front till u not see any dust. but becareful though. dont play football with ur baby

I think most peoples problems are with bad disks... My Gamestop store has had 10 returns already. The disks just don't play, I would expect to hear an official announcement about problems with the duplication process or something...

my 30001 fucked up my SA disc already, how gay is that shit,im finna go on a rampage in RL.I put in my SA disc CAREFULLY.....never took it out,got many disc read errors, cried, took it out,saw a huge scratch ALREADY.Tried it in another model PS2 and it kept freezing? Should I just killed myself? does god hate me?

10-27-2004, 03:36 PM
That scratch would've have to have been there beforehand. As for disk read errors on other models, maybe other models have troubles, too, that they've been unable to pinpoint. All I can tell you is to clean out your PS2, and if that don't work, sit back and wait until they say more on the subject. You could also contact Rockstar in a semi-formal letter (that is, have words spelled out and sentances grammatically correct, unlike what most of you are doing now) outlining that your model PS2 is having disk read errors for no concievable reason, then they might look into it. They're not going to pay attention to an e-mail that looks like
ya um u guys fucking suk i bot sa and my ps2 dun play it . my model # is 30098 and ppl were sayin dat sum models dun work at all, dat sony was tryin to sell der pstwos
They're not going to read that. If you say
Hello, I recently purchursed your new game, Grand Theft Auto: San Anreas, and my Playstation 2 is experiencing random disk read errors when I attempt to play the game. I've tried cleaning my system, but to no avail. I've read on gtagaming.com's message boards that certain model numbers have problems due to random error. My model number is 30098. Has there been any reports of that model number Playstation 2 having troubles playing the game?
See how much better the second one is? They may actually respect you if you say that. I may even let you copy & paste and edit as needed. Problems do not get solved with idiots.
And yes, your god hates you, and you, and everybody else who follows him. Why else would he make your sexual peak 18 and 35 for males & females (respectively). I call it evolution, personally, but the Christian Bible really doesn't follow evolution. Unless your Jewish, in which case it still doesn't. I'm also assuming your a Semetic, as you said "god" rather than "gods".But if you're some other monotheistic religion, then I really don't know how to comment.

i was wrong in my earleir posts i thought i had the 39001 but i have the 30001 and was complaing about the graphics and how alot of the signs seem to be unreadable untily ou get right up on them. but i went to gamespots site and looked at their screenshots and noticed it in alot of those 2 how alot of the signs and stuff are unreadable from a distance. but i went and bought a S-video cable hook up for my ps2 and it helped out with my graphics issues of the game alot. i have no more complaints about this game now. but the only complaint i did have was some graphics probs but the s-video cable has fixed my prob. and from looking at gamespots screenshots i guess its not posed to be crystal clear anyway.
if you guys r unhappy witht he graphics try buying a s-video cable hookup for your tv if you have the outputs for it. it made my SA look like it went from watching a VHS to watching a DVD. turning the brightness up on my tv also helped out alot.
Well if it does,nt work on my ps2 then i will contact sony and get a replacment
Don,t be stupid and buy another ps2 why should you have to spend even more money because sony built your machine with cheap hardware.
When you buy a console you expect all games to work not be like a pc and have problems with some games.
Is anyone else think it is funny that a new ps2 as been released and now san andreas which we know is the biggest game in the world and some ps2 don,t work with it.
Got to hand to them it is one way of getting more sales
