Was the main GTA 3 character actually called Fido, or was this just a name given to him by Maria? Also, could he not talk because he was hit in the throat or the face? I have never had these questions awnsered.

He doesn't have a name, like SimonS said, Fido is his nickname. Tony Cipriani calls him 'kid'.
and he never talks, don't know why. I kinda like it that way, makes him look more badass

By the way, 'Fido' dont speak cause he got shot in the throat in the intro.
You see him get shot, and the gun is aimed near his head, but he aint dead - so it must have hit him in the throat, hence no voice.
on a mission for luigi he reads a note!

I've seen a dude with a 13 inch knife jammed in his head. It's possible to live after being shot from the neck up, but very unlikely.

I like the way he nods his head when hes taking phone missions and things. when she calls him fido, well i think his hair and face looks like a "fido" lol, but no, he didn't have a real name. I didn't realise he was shot in the neck, i know someone did because they posted it, did anyone else notice it though?

... Are you seroius! he gets shot right in the neck by Catilina in the begining with a shotgun anyone with eyes that can see saw that, they even said it on a few GTA sites, thats why he cant talk, some people are just unaware these days...

Back to the topic, Fido is not his real name. He doesn't talk because his girlfriend shot him in the face in the first cinematic. He is columbian, he was apart of the cartel and got betrayed now at the end of the game he owns Liberty City. There. Question answered.:Peace:

Yeah, they never said that and it wasn't a shotgun that catalina shot him with they were 2 pistols. You can't see where he was shot because there is no detail of a bullet hole.

Um... no. You need to look closer. Fido is on the ground and Catalina and Chico are fleeing. They run out of the bank firing their guns, Chico round the corner of the alley first, followed by Catalina, then Fido. As Fido rounds the corner, Catalina says "Sorry babe, I'm an ambitious girl, and you *bang bang* ...you're just small time. She shoots him in the throat, he falls as the screen goes red, then it shows the headline of the Liberty Tree and starts the whole shpiel where the Cloumbians kidnap the asian guy and B-ball and Fido escape.

Why are you arguing? You're wrong, get over it. Fido does get shot, and if you read the paper in the next scene, it says "Unnamed felon shot by girlfriend accomplice". Catalina was Fido's girlfriend, not the other guy, so for you to say Fido wasn't the one who got shot, you're taking all the information that's there and throwing it out the window. Heck, you might as well say Fido and Catalina went to get a coffee afterwards because it isn't any more accurate than what you just said.
And for all those saying he got shot in the throat, while that may be true, that's not why he doesn't talk. If you recall, the first GTA games for PSone all had main characters that didn't talk (and didn't have names, for that matter). The idea was that it was your alter ego playing through the game, not some dude who already has a life. And seeing that GTA3 was Rockstar's transition from 2D to 3D game play, a lot of the elements from the earlier games were brought into GTA3. That's why Fido doesn't talk, because "you're" Fido, he's the player's alto-ego, and to give him a life of his own (like with Tommy Vercetti, and now CJ) he'd just be another guy. Understand?
