crimson editor, a better version of notepad. You could just use notepad though, what ever floats your boat.

Well X-HTML is pretty good. That is what I use to edit IPB files. What it does is it reads the code and sorts it into clean readable form. You can find it for free at Dowloads.com Its called X-HTML-Kit Or plain ol' HTML-Kit.
Its features include a previewer so you can view the code and make sure it's correct. And is really good for IPB modders

I used to use notepad, but I use crimsion editor now, which is pretty much the same except it has tabs so you can switch between files easily.
I like Dreamweaver MX for designing, it's very simple. For coding, I use the code aspect of the same program, because it's very good at colouring the text when you use functions etc.

crimson editor does the colour coding aswell. It helps if you get a parse error and you can't figure out what is wrong. you can tell by the colours of the code.

dreamweaver is pretty good, but like all HTML editors (besides manual ones like notepad) it adds a bunch of stuff to the HTML which isn't good if you plan on editing it, but dreamweaver is a good program if you're rarely going to edit the actual HTML
For people sch as yourself I suggest you use Dreamweaver MX. Yet my site is pure Evan and, oh yeah a little Photoshop and Notepad kicked in their fair share too.
