View Full Version : RUMOUR: Slim PS3 Pics Emerge
A Japanese blog has posted what appear to be images of a 'PS3 Slim' (a PS3 hardware redesign). From the look of the pictures, the machine already appears to be in production.
Sony recently denied plans to release new PS3 hardware. "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3,” stated a Sony U.K. representative.
We were hesitant to report this as we have a few reasons to doubt the validity of these pictures, but after enough tips flooded our inbox we felt compelled to share it. Whether this ends up as fact or fiction, we've posted the pictures below.SOURCE (http://www.psu.com/Rumor--PS3-Slim-photos-leaked--a007222-p0.php)

This is the new packaging for the console.
So do you believe this? I don't think they're legit but anything is possible, we know sony have been working on reducing the chipset and were planning to have 45nm chips this year. So maybe this is legit, it also would dramaticly cut production costs and make a price cut in the near future more likely.

Here is a shot of the original 60GB/20GB motherboard, next to the new one.

Here is a shot of a known PS3 manufacturing line, notice the pink and green workstations similar to those shown in the above pictures:

MainTek is the company that manufactures the PS3.
GoFreak over at GAF has put together a rough estimate of the size reduction based on the size of the disc loading slot:

Fake. If this were to be real, it would basically be a flat PS3 but with an external power suply, instead of an internal one.

alright mate, you dont need to tell me something twice
It looks HIDEOUS. And I reckon it's a fake. We've been having pictures of slim PS3's ever since the PS3 was launched.
And just because E3 is coming up, those silly Asians think their shots might look credible. I say not.
EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention that it looks cheap. If it were real, no one would buy it. Look at the cheap plastics. I know the original PS3 is plastic as well, but at least it's shiny and it looks like a finished product. This looks more like one of those PolyStations or POP Stations. (See video below.)

I did wonder if it was a fake at first, but I stopped wondering that when I saw this message from the MainTeK (the company who manufactures the PlayStation 3), that was sent to the original source of the pictures.
MainTeK wrote:
We would like to ask you kindly remove the following pages of your pages on your website because the page contains MainTeK Computer Incorporation confidential document and photos, which were illegally released and posted on your website.
That alone basically confirms that they're the ones who made the PS3 seen in the pictures.

I sure don't hope Sony are stupid enough to release a slim PS3 that is as ugly as that. PS3 visual appeal is dependent on the following: Shine and chrome.
But if a PS3 that thin is ever made, they may as well build in a monitor and keyboard because it would look like a laptop.

Slim, your last sentence, actually made sense.
If Sony was to make a laptop style Playstation 3 version, with a better browser and capabilities, it would draw an older audience towards the gaming console, thus raising the sales.
@5tatic: The PS3 in the pics isn't actually that thin, if you look at the pics the PS3 case is in two seperate halve's and looks to be only an inch thinner then the current model. Plus they can shrink the power supply along with the chipset because it would obviously require less power to run, so i doubt it would be external.
But i do agree that it looks ugly and is more then likely a fake.
I would hope that's fake. Of course, if it took up less space and worked just as well, it could look like a platypus for all I care

I hope they don't make a slim PS3. Every time they slim down their consoles, they suck. The slim PS1 and PS2's were horrible, they broke way too easy.

I don't get why people would buy a slimmer, more expensive version of a console. Its always gonna sit in the same place. Why would you move it around. I like the look but then again there will be a catch to this. Less USB ports. External power brick. There will be something lacking in this. The PS3 will get slimmed eventually. All Playstation have.

Huh? Slim PS's are usually cheaper or the same price as the older models when they are released, well atleast they are in Aus. Not to mention they usually have more features and better one's too, like the slim PS2 included a faster DVD drive, an ethernet port for online games and IR reciever for universal remotes.

I actually had a Series-5000 PS2 which included a quieter DVD Drive, Quiet Fans, built in IR Sensor for the remote and used less electric. Those ones were near silent.

I think the only thing the slim PS2 lost was the ability to add a hard drive. Otherwise it was the same or better since it came with the ethernet which was about $40 for the network adapter add-on at the time.
Also to the people who said that the way it looks doesn't matter: It may not to you but alot of people are more likely to buy something that looks sleek and sexy than something that looks dull and cheap. And those pictures make it look extremely dull and cheap compared to the current PS3 which is pretty sexy.
More fuel for the fire...
In case you haven’t heard enough rumors about the alleged leaked PlayStation 3 Slim photos, an unnamed Chinese company sent tech blog Engadget a cease and desist order, requesting the removal of the photos from the site. While that is in no way an admission to what some believe are authentic factory photos, it does at the very least enflame the ongoing rumors.
The letter allegedly states: “We just find that the following web pages on your website contain some confidential document and photos, which were highly possibly illegally released and posted.”
The company also asked Engadget to keep the letter confidential. Woops.
You may recall that IGN reported last week that a "trustworthy" U.S. GameStop employee had some inside knowledge of the PS3 Slim. Speaking with a Sony merchandising representative about the leaked photos, the rep was surprised the photos were "released already." Many PlayStation Universe readers found "trustworthy" and GameStop to contradict, but remember the report is still just a rumor.
From our outlook, it seems someone either has an extremely detailed prank underway, or some Sony executives will soon have red faces. Either way, check back with us during E3 for any major Sony console news.

Hmm, it's starting to look more likely but i still tend to think it's a very well organised prank.

So this is the PS3 Slim...
Acting on behalf of mystery client, a Taiwanese law firm asks online media outlets to remove photos dismissed by Sony--reigniting rumors that they could be authentic.
Typically, the "Big Three" console makers--Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony--decline to comment when purported photos of new hardware designs leak. That wasn't the case last week, when Sony Computer Entertainment Europe flatly dismissed what looked like snapshots of a new 120GB slimline PlayStation 3. "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3," a rep told UK outlet CVG, appearing to put a stake in the heart of the matter.
However, all that changed this week when the Taiwanese law firm of Li Mo and Associates sent out letters to various gaming outlets--including GameSpot--demanding photos of the PS3 Slimline be removed forthwith. Sent on the behalf of an unnamed client, the letter contains language which suggests the photos may be authentic and not a knock-off console like the much-mocked Vii.
The same letter sent to GameSpot was also received by tech blog Engadget and game site Spong, and reads as follows:
Dear Sirs,
As appointed by our client, we hereby inform you that the Web pages on your Web site (as attached hereto) contain some of our client's confidential documents and photos, which were highly possibly illegally released and posted.
We are investigating this violation and will bring all necessary legal actions regarding this matter. In order to protect the confidential information and prevent you from further legal issues and infringements, please immediately remove those pages and keep our request confidential. Thank you for your cooperation.
Your cooperation is deeply appreciated.
When contacted by GameSpot, Sony Computer Entertainment America declined to comment on the letter, whether it had any relationship to Sony, or the PS3 Slim photos' authenticity. "We don't comment on rumors or speculation," a corporate communications representative said.

Looks like they really kept their request confidential :P
I like their triple adverb as well: "highly possibly illegally"
Not sure what to make of this now, except that if Sony is in fact working on a slim design, that the one depicted in these photos is FAR from the final design.

It's just Sony asking the public what they think of a possible new design. We know that's how they do things =P
This just can not happen. You know what the biggest problem here is? When you tell your friends you bought a PS3 and they see you bought the slim one, they're going to think you made it yourself. Or that you were so nerdy, you put a new cover in cheap plastics on your old PS2.
Or you laugh at them for spending a fortune on the George Foreman grill
I'd buy it if it was cheaper than the current PS3. Then I could just put this on top of my 360 or my DVD player.
I know right, why have a DVD player if I have a PS3/360, well the DVD player is dead silent.

Oh my god. Not only does it have the remarkable power of the normal size PS3, it has a sleek, stylish, and thin design to it. I think it looks absolutely fantastic. It's like the Macbook Air, but better, imo.
I'm buying this day one. It's awesome. I don't even know what you guys are talking about or even mean when you say it's shitty, or ugly. You must be crazzzzzyyy. C'mon.
omg lol jk, jusssssstttt fuckin' with ya! Yeah it looks bad. Terribad, as we would say in the hood. It's a bit pretentious to even think that they would allow that to be a possible design. Ugh.

Ahh but DVD Players can be Region Free and not have shitty out dated 1990s protection methods that makes DVD's (and Blu-rays but we'll ignore that for this) have a Green Screen when played through an RGB Scart which is the best quality possible for an SDTV.

The old playstation 1 had the normal playstation font saying just "playstation" on it. When they made the smaller, more compact version, they used the PSone font. This shows that they don't always use the same font when slimming down their console. Although they used the same font for the slimline PS2 that they big PS2, so I could be right or wrong with one.
Also if you look at the bottom right part of the PSP side of that image, you will see a blue box saying 16GB/GO. Then if you look at the bottom left part of the PS3 side of that image, you will see a red box saying 120GB/PS3. They are the same style as each other, just different colours.
Like 5tatic said, the boxes do look really similar with the flowing band across middle and the white background, it also has all the playstation network logos and advertisements all over the place, which makes it even more official. Good for people that buying a PS3 for the first time but I think I will stick with my big one.
