View Full Version : Sony unveiling motion-sensing PS3 controller at E3?

Variety's CutScene blog has spoken to several sources who have said that Sony will be revealing a motion sensing controller for the PlayStation 3 at E3 this year. Reportedly, the PlayStation 3 motion-sensor will use LED lights and a webcam to track movements. Because the camera reads the shape and angle of the lights, the PlayStation 3's motion sensors will be more accurate than the Wii.

Sony filed a patent for this tech in January of 2007, and it has apparently taken this long for the work to be finished and the controller ready for public consumption. Sony is apparently reaching out to developers and publishers to get some early software coming, and the thing will hit shelves reportedly later this year or early next year.

But the question is: Will it make a difference? Are consumers really going to plonk down the 400 bucks it costs for a PlayStation 3 because it has a super-accurate motion-sensing controller? Or is this a case of some executives at Sony looking at the success of the Wii and saying, "Make it like that!" without really understanding the reasons for the Wii's success.

What we heard: Less than 48 hours after a geyser of speculation erupted about a new PSP reveal at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the Sony rumor volcano is rumbling once again. This time, Variety's game blog, The Cut Scene, is citing "several sources" as saying that Sony will unveil a new motion-sensing controller at its E3 press event on Tuesday, June 2.

Though not the first report of a new Sony motion-sensing controller--Sony filed a series of patents for such technology last fall--the Variety article appears to be one of the first to boast a detailed description from a developer who has seen the device firsthand.

"A good source saw a working prototype several months ago that largely fit what was in the patent. Sony's controller apparently used LEDs (light emitting diodes, essentially little electric light sources) and a small webcam to track the device's movements," reports Cut Scene correspondent Ben Fritz. "Because the camera can read different color lights and the shape and angle of each light, it's much more accurate than the Wii-mote. It can track precise movements, including along the Z axis (pushing toward and away from the TV; something the Wii is really bad at) as well as velocity."

Fritz's source's description jibes with the form factor shown in the patent: a controller that can be broken apart into two halves topped with bulbous sensor arrays. The unnamed developer is also apparently one of a number of game creators who are being asked to work on games specifically designed for the still-unnamed controller.

The official story: "More rumors, so we don't [comment]."--Sony Computer Entertainment America rep.

Bogus or not bogus?: Last year's patents prove that Sony is working on some kind of new camera-assisted motion-sensing tech. (The Sixaxis certainly didn't do the trick.) Fritz's detailed account also indicates that the device is likely already in developers' hands.

However, even if Sony is currently planning to unveil the device at E3, that's no guarantee that it will actually be unveiled there. Not even the Big Three console makers are immune from last-minute changes, as evidenced by Microsoft's abrupt removal of the Halo 3: ODST reveal from its E3 press event last year. Gamers won't have to wait long to find out, though; the expo will kick off in Los Angeles one month from today.

Seems like all console companies are doing this. There are even rumors that Microsoft are making a full body motion sensing suit.

yea..saw the news today! That would be cool :P

Yeah, except if Microsoft had a full body suit, it would be pretty fucking stupid. Moving around like an idiot in your living room with a gay suit on, pretending to walk and just getting fed up and pissed.

If Sony does release the motion sensor controller, it would be wicked.

Most unbiased post of the year

The controller looks weird. Almost like a Wii wannabe.

Haha, I was meaning to be a fanboy.

Hoping someone would catch on.
Although, I don't really want to see Sony or Microsoft get on the motion sensor bandwagon. I mean, Sony's controller has limited SIXAXIS capabilites, but we don't really need any more then what we have. I believe it would be a waste of money to do this, even it is just a rumor.

Ugh, I don't like motion sensor controllers. Its one of the top reasons as to why I hate the Wii. I prefer the normal controllers where you just hold it and press buttons, none of this complicated motion sensor shit.

yeah..also you can't sit and play games you have to stand all the time you want to play games.

Exactly.

The Sixaxis is ok because it isn't like the Wiimote where you have to use it all the time, but just for simple small things. Other than that, I don't think gaming should include any more motion sensing.

Yeah I like how the playstation controller has barely changed at all. This would be so weird I agree with iKlipse I like holding it and pressing buttons.

I'm gonna be honest with you, that looks like crap. I wish they'd do more for the system and its users. I know they've come a seriously long way since the launch, but the Xbox 360 I feel is miles ahead still. A motion-sensing PS3 controller really won't help much.

Yeah same here, I prefer just to sit and play games, and that's how games should be. Sony should concentrate on other stuff rather than a bloody motion sensor controller.

Bah, I hate this motion sensitive fad. I like how the motion controls on the six axis are purely optional. Sometimes, especially at night I could not be bothered flailing my arms like an idiot. Besides it doesn't suit every game, can someone tell me how they would apply it to Fallout 3 for example?

best use of the wiimote i've seen:cool: jump to halfway just to see the cool bit

at the moment though it does make you look even more of an ass than if you just used the wii:facepalm:

It's not complicated. It simply doesn't work as it should.

that'd be fun to play something like GTA with, go up and punch random strangers

Motion sensor will fade away as more advanced means of gaming come to light. Also, it looks like I could kill someone with that PS3 motion sensor controller.
