(Not an Actual PSP Go! Photo)

1Up's David Ellis has been scouring the Earth for details on the PlayStation Portable 2. Through numerous unnamed sources, he has confirmed several details about the upcoming handheld system. Some of them were completely expected, while some of the details are new. Here's the (supposed) skinny on the next PSP:

It will not have a UMD drive; all the games will be downloaded and stored on internal memory
It will not have a second analog stick
There will be two versions: 8GB and 16GB
The name will likely be PlayStation Portable Go!
The system will be unveiled at E3 2009
It will be available in Japan in September 2009 and America in October or November 2009

Ellis further speculates that the PSP Go! will borrow several design elements from Sony's Mylo 2 portable Internet device. If the release dates are accurate then this makes a lot of sense. Sony could use leftover Mylo parts -- and I'm certain there are lots of leftovers -- to build the PSP Go!, which would allow the company to quickly build up a healthy supply for an autumn launch. Ellis also implies that the system is a reactionary move designed to counter the launch of Nintendo'sDSi and the burgeoning success of the iPhone/iPod Touch as a gaming platform.

The news makes me miss David Reeves and his stupid quotes. It was only a few months ago when he proclaimed that Sony had no plans for a PSP successor. Too bad he's not with the company anymore. I would have loved to have been all, "In your face, Davey Boy!!!"

Seriously though, I'm hyper curious to learn more about this system at E3 2009, particularly details on the screen, form factor, and price.

What do you guys and gals think of the news? Are you down with digital downloads for the system? Do you like the name? Should Sony offer a mauve version out of the gate?

I really don't like the idea of downloading the Games.

Tell us stuff we don't know already. These are just rumours btw, nothing's confirmed.

C'est Vrai?

Je pense pas.

We'll have to wait until more details surface, but for now, it's a myth to me.

I don't think Sony will say "you have to download PSP games"

Why not? Everything is going digital. Even Microsoft said downloading is the future - which is why they're not gonna support blu-ray.

Steam is soon going to be the norm for PC games.

and if you dont like downloading, there is the psp slim for you.

Yeah, if this was true, we would have learned about it a year ago, too. We know the PS3 was coming 3 years before it actually came out. Sony would have announced this new PSP earlier to increase hype and stuff, not 5 months before it was coming out.

I do like downloading games online...and Sony is doing this because pirates won't be able to put the whole game online.

It's not an entirely new PSP. It's just a design revision of the current model.

If it turns out to be really cool then I'll probably get one at the end of the year. There are some amazing PSP games coming this year. LBP, Motorstorm, the new SOCOM, etc. Apparently San Andreas Stories may be announced soon as well.

Downloading is lame IMO. It's messy and ultimately you will run out of space and have to get a bigger hard drive.

I like to have physical copies of games, just having the case with the box art makes a big difference to me.

This doesn't sound very believable to me, there have been a lot of different stories for the next PSP.

What we can believe though is Sony is pulling the guns out for the PSP this year, for ages no one has cared for the PSP since like early 2007 but this year we have a barrage of games coming out for it, quite a few big name titles too, so Sony must be planning something for the PSP.

I'll have to disagree with that. Downloading games is much, much more convienient, especially for a portable console. Instead of carrying around little plastic discs, you can just have all of them stored directly to the console. I've heard that the new PSPs are supposedly going to be 8 or 16 gigs internally, which should be enough.

I'm definitely going to (re)buy a PSP if this turns out to be true.

wrong^

i think that you should still have the option of the physical copy. you could then install the game to the hard drive, like you can with 360, but not have to have the actual disc to play it.

if you have a collection of games, like people do with movies, digital downloads obliterates that. theres a lot to be said for actually having something in your hand.

I agree entirely.

Well there are many design Variations of the new PSP, and most of them are Slide models just like UMPC. However even if it becomes reality it won't be very practical if you ask me. i mean its bigger and you will have to carry it in your hand, while you can slip the current PSP 3000 in your pocket. (hardly but you can) I do it. And i think sony will make a big mistake if it doesn't include second analog stick. and improve its sensitivity. But after all lets all wait and we'll see sooner or later.

As long as they keep releasing games for the original PSP I dont care

If they switch to downloading games only, I will be quite pissed.

Downloading games works ok for the iPhone and iPod Touch simply because they are small, simple games. Same with most Xbox Live and PSN download games. If they switch to making all games like that, I will be quite mad. I want to use the hard drive to store other things, not to fill up with games. I want cold, hard copies of the game in case something happens with the system, and I just love having boxes. I make boxes for games that are downloadable only simply because I don't like not having it with the rest.

If they do get rid of the UMD, they better switch to like the DS's cartridges or something, or else I most likely won't be buying it.

Also, UMDs contain like an average of 2GBs or so per game, so if this rumor was true and the system came in 8 or 16 gigs, think about that. You'd only be able to have 4 games with you at once time on the lower end model.

UMD's are actually 1.8GB, obviously not all games take up that much room and many contain padding, all they are doing is selling ISO's really, something CFW users have been using since like forever but still, we have that as an option to Dump our purchased UMD's to Memory Stick or PC.

If sony goes through with a plan like this, it sounds like it will be more of a general media device rather than a portable gaming system.

Sony will obviously still sell UMDs. They are not going to be like 'fuck you 99% of psp owners'. Also, I don't see why downloading is 'messy'. Like Ash said, 1.8gb is the usual size of an ISO, but Sony will obviously remove the padding. With the speeds of the hard drive, I don't see why they couldn't compress the size of it either. On a 16gb hard drive, you could get ~20 good PSP games, and there aren't even that many good psp games.

i'm afraid if sony changed the format or something which will make the new psp couldnt play the dumped game..

maybe, juz maybe, i'll b fine if downloading the game is way much cheaper than physically owning the game and only if the game is available for the whole country (i hate seeing "this content isnt available in ur damned country" coz psn for malaysia still doesnt offer contents to buy which is sucks..

A Reminder is that UMD is a TERRIBLE FORMAT and we should at least give props for Sony for trying to sort out the problems with the machine. Running a game off a Memory Stick enables the game to perform much better, load much faster, etc, but also benefits the system making the battery life longer and the machine quieter because it doesn't have to power the UMD drive and it won't be running so the spinning and seek noise won't be there, many games benefit from this. Vce City Stories is one where running it off Memory Stick is better and the difference between UMD and MS is VERY noticeable.

So it is nice that Sony took notice of this and started offering an official way of doing it and started basing their new plans around this. I'm 50/50 on Digital Distribution, but the PSP is a format where it works great and improves the games over the UMD option. They will still be selling them in shops, an example of what they are doing is Papaton 2, sony are trying out a method where they sell the Box Art, Booklet, etc, like normal, but instead of the UMD, you get a Card with a download code (ala Xbox Live) and you can download the game as many times as you like.

This might not be true. One of the biggest games for the PSP being released next week, Patapon 2, is going UMDless, meaning you can buy the box in the store, but it just comes with a voucher for the PlaystationStore to download the game.
