In the excellent Gamasutra interview I referenced in this article, Sony senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille also talked about the PlayStation Portable's piracy issues. One of the reasons that PSP software sales are low, he believes, is that it's fairly easy to download illegal copies of games for the system. Dille said:
"I'm convinced and we're convinced that piracy has taken out a big chunk of our software sales on PSP. It's been a problem that the industry has to address together; it's one that I think the industry takes very seriously, but we need to do something to address this because it's criminal what's going on, quite frankly.
It's not good for us, but it's not good for the development community. We can look at data from BitTorrent sites from the day Resistance: Retribution goes on sale and see how many copies are being downloaded illegally, and it's frankly sickening. We are spending a lot of time talking about how we can deal with that problem."
Part of the problem is Sony's fault. It's simple for gamers to download games onto a Memory Stick Duo and play them on the PSP. Certainly piracy is a problem for any gaming system, but the PSP makes it so easy to get away with. For first-party games, like Resistance: Retribution, Sony loses out on the software sale, but still has a hardware sale to claim. In the case of third-party games, Sony still gets the PSP hardware sale, but third-party publishers get completely screwed. It will be interesting to see what measures thePSP's successor will use to combat piracy.
Out of curiosity, have any of you pirated games for your PSP? Don't worry, I'm not here to narc on you. You can be honest. :D
