Do the mods still work if the official patch is installed?

yes in fact you get more mod compatibility if you install the patch, since most tools released now are aimed for games using the official patch

thanks i try modding again, also if i back up files do i have to call them something else or just move them to another folder.

MagicIV will backup them for you(like this: handling.dat.magic, so no worries) and will install a patch which with that you are given the ability to mod the game, unfortunately game won't run the edited files, so you must install it
