View Full Version : System(?) Lag, but only after 'Loading'

I think this is a new problem, but there is a good chance i just didn't notice it before; either way it bugs the hell out of me now.

Here's the situation I can get it to repeat itself best. I am saved at Sunshine Autos, grab a car and exit right then take the first right. As I pass the police station or shortly thereafter on the main road, the game pauses for a second to load, and continues on. Normal, it can't hold the whole city in memory :P. Here is what isn't normal. For that first part of driving, up until it loads, the game runs smooth as butter on the breakfast toast. As soon as it has to load, however, it gets choppy, sort of like a lower framerate but not quite. As if it's going 3 frames pause 2 frames pause 3 frames pause (instead of just slower or less frames). Know what I mean?

The mods I've installed shouldn't be causing it - a couple of bikes. I'm downloading new display drivers now, but it seems like if it were them then it would run bad all the time not just after it has to load a new area. My hunch is that the game is trying to load too much at once. My draw distance is at like 3 notches (1/3rd). I have an Athlon 2500 XP processor and a Radeon 7200 (64mb). Not an earth shattering video card but it's enough, isn't it?

Any ideas?

I think your game is also trying to load too much, if you are running windows XP try running the game in compatabilty mode for windows 98/me

Nope, that just made it -really- bad and the music started skipping as wel. Go figure - thanks for the suggestion though. Stinks cause it runs so well for those first 20 seconds, haha. I wish the game gave you more options for limiting how much it was loading beyond draw distance (Which I've got at the minimum now.. helped a lil bit anyway).

Get a new video card. Or uninstall things you don't use.

how much RAM do you have? When you run the game try closing all the programs in the system tray by the clock, your pc might be running out of memory. Also if you have a slow hard drive, or its big, defragment it.

I've got a nice ATA 133 hard drive and a 512 stick of ram... only a 40 gig drive but it has been awhile since I defragged, I'll give that a shot. Cheers :)

Yeep, that was it. Was pretty darn fragged. Check out the picture. (I'll post it as an attach)

Left is of course the new, and red is of course the bad stuff. Blech! Did a fresh repartition/format/install in mid January too.
