I'm playing Vice City on a Radeon 9800 Pro, 2.8 P4, 1gb ram dual channel, Abit IC7 mboard and Audigy soundcard but occaisonally the game freezes and screeches then decides to restart my PC for me. Great. I've done the usual stuff like new drivers etc and reinstalled the game but cannot seem to shake it off. Anyone seen this problem and got any advice for me please?:mad2:

I dont know if this will help but what operating system do you use? I had problems when using XP but when I ran the game under Windows 98 compatability the game ran fine.

i feel the hurt...my game just crashed an hour ago and i have to reinstall the game, along with well over 50 mods. And, to top it all off, start a new game

BAH! FINALLY! i meet someone with the same problem :p
buzzer1967, i feel your pain... i could never fix it. i updated all the drivers i could, and nothing worked. now, i just avoid the places that restart my computer.
it's not your game, it's your computer
Restarts like this are usually caused by overheating. A good idea would be to drop a few more case fans in and make sure the air is making it's way effectively accross the graphics card and CPU. Also, changing ribbon cables to rounded ones may also help.

oh, that sounds like it might be the problem... also, since my graphics are integrated with my motherboard, it gets even hotter :(

I'm not convinced its a heat problem. UT2004 never crashes, Raven Shield never crashes, Call of Duty never crashes so why would Vice City?? Its either sound/graphics/chipset drivers, I know it. Or its the frame limiter/refresh rate or something. My P4 is a Prescott chip, but heat doesnt seem to be a problem anywhere else, and Vice City doesnt exactly tax a Radeon 9800 Pro now does it? Any other helpful suggestions welcomed. I'll get to the bottom of this if it kills me !

When it crashes and restarts, does the "blue screen of death" flash up, but so quickly you can't even read what it says....I remember having this problem with a different game and I had to re-install windows because there was a major MESS up in the registry
EDIT : maybe cock up wasn't the right words

for me (on xp) my computer just restarts... then when it's startnig up again it says "would you like to report error in windows" and all that rubbish. but mine said it's a graphics controller error or something like that.
there was a major cock up in the registry
sounds interesting ;)

Mine used to crash like every hour..
when it happened, my resolution dropped to 600*480, 16 colors (yes, 16 colors) and an error message appeared, said somethin like:
Windows just recovered from a serious video problem. save all your progress and press OK to restart your comp.
after i restarted a message appeared, if i'd like to send it to Microsoft and bla bla..
ANYWAY, I thought my Intel (r) 845g was fucked up, Untill i installed the new drivers.. now it works without any crashes :)
