View Full Version : Getting White Cars? Look Here.
If you're getting white cars in Vice City, follow this procedure and it should all resolve itself.
1. Browse to C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Vice City (or wherever you installed it)
2. Open the Models directory
3. DELETE the file named GTA3.dir (Do not delete GTA3.img)
4. Restart GTA Vice City, and you should see a message informing you that the textures are being converted to an optimal format for your video card.
Unfortunately, you'll probably have to do this every time you install a mod. It's all because your card doesn't support DirectX Texture compression. A good solution would be to buy a new video card, anything above the Geforce 3 or ATi Radeon 8xxx range should do.
If you have any other problems, just reply to this thread.

I get an unhandled exeption to.
This should force the game into rebuilding the textures. There's no other way to do it, and perhaps it's best if you BACK UP YOUR FILES
Just because I didn't tell you to in the first place doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, so to those who are "pissed" about it, don't blame me.

He reinstalled it and tried it again. Unhandled Exception again.
Perhaps he should try updating his Graphics/Sound/Motherboard drivers and installing the latest version of DirectX. (9.0b)

OMG NO NO NO NO NOO!!! YOU DON'T DO THAT!!! Easy, just replace teh files in teh gta3.img, then all you have to do it replace the txd file with the one in the txd.img, THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO! I figured that out one day......So replace the files with gta3/img and teh txd files in txd.img, Do not let the thing load the textures, that wastes time

Dragon's right on the money.
TXD.img is created by the game automatically if you're on a video card that doesn't support DXT texture compression. It contains all the uncompressed texture files for everything in the game. All you need to do is open it with IMGTool, find the texture for the car you're replacing, and replace the old texture with the new.
If you have a new video card, you probably don't even have TXD.img, so don't fret ;)

Ey, this might sound stupid, but if you reffer to the white car like the player skin when you put nothing on the bmp or you replace it with only white (only the structure, but no color and no effect of painting, etc), is because you have two txd on gta3.img with the same name, probably because you put a new mod, without deleting the old txt from the gta3.img (I think is the same with the dff file but I am not sure ), it happened to me a couple times when I began replacing cars, so find the latest cars you replaced and look if the txd appears 2 times.
Again, this could sound stupid, but happens.
See ya.

I had this problem with both GTA3 and Vice. For GTA3 I used the GTA Mod Installer and it fixed the problem completly. I still have the problem with Vice City.

but im geting white cars wit the vcm and the vcm cars and motorcycles and mabye the helis please solve my problem cause what neil is solving is the manual install mods not the vcm mods
Go to C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\Models\, then delete 'txd.img' and 'txd.dir.'
If you don't have those files, then this won't be of any help to you.

If you don't have the files your graphics card supports direct x texture compression. Then, the textures will load correctly. Unless its a dodgey mod.
Also with my old card that didn't support direct X texture compression, when I deleted those files I kept getting unhandled exception errors.
So back them up before you try it.

I also got the white cars and after following the directions i also got the unhandled exceptions..BUT i did find a solution! - at least it workied for me :D
1. delete the gta_vc.set in GTA Vice City User Files
2. uninstall your current videocard drivers
3. borrow an old videocard from a friend. a TNT2 or GeForce2 will do it, and install it.
4. boot the computer and install an older nvidia driver.
5. start up GTA Vice City and select your desired screen resolution. i used 1024x768 @ 32 bit colors.
6. start the game and notice that it will convert the textures for optimal performance. what happens here is that the following files are created:
data\CAPS.DAT
models\txd.dir
models\txd.img
7. play the game a few minutes and exit.
8. uninstall the video driver.
9. shut the computer down and reinstall your own videocard.
10. boot the computer and install an older nvidia driver that matches your videocard. mine is a Asus GeForce3 TI500 and i used ASUS display driver version 56.72 for Win2K and XP from here:
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/selectftp. aspx?l1_id=9&l2_id=2&l3_id=3&m_id=13&f_name=nv5672_2kxp.zip~zaqwedc
it should work for all GeForce 3 videocards regardless if it's an Asus or not.
11. now the important step to get rid of the unhandled exceptions!
This is done by turning off the antialiasing feature in the GeForce Properties window. To do this:
--Enter your Display Properties menu for your GeForce Card, and change the "Intellisample" settings to "Application." To do this:
Right-click on your Windows Desktop, and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.
Click on the "settings" tab, found near the top of the Display Properties window, then click on the "Advanced" button.
Click on the GeForce FX tab near the top of the screen. This should open up a window displaying settings for your particular GeForce card. If a side-menu does not appear, click on the small green button on the left hand side of the window; a smaller window should appear on that side.
Click on the "Performance & Quality Settings" option.
On the Antialiasing Slider, click and drag the slider bar all the way to the left hand side to disable the Antialiasing. Click "OK" twice to close the windows.
One last thing! - A third-party feature pack for streaming video files, called "Nimo Codec Pack," has been known to cause a number of different problems when trying to install and run GTA: Vice City. If you do have this installed, it's recommended uninstalling the Nimo Codec Pack, then try to install the game.
phew..that was a lot of text but it works! (at least for me) :p

It sometimes happen to me (I mean white objects) when I delete and then add files in the img archive without rebuilding. If I rebuild the archive the problem gets solved. Why does this happen?
