View Full Version : So will this be top-down or 3rd person?

To be really honest, I think this will be a top-down game. GTA's quite a large game so I think the DS will have problems. That's unless they don't make it free roam, but that's the whole point of GTA.

What do you guys think?

Top down without a doubt. Unless you want to see Driver 2 like graphics.

Why the DS though? PSP is proven to be the best port if they had to do it. Obviously either want to try and get a bigger fan base or just love having law suits on them all the time.

What's with the extreme negativity?

It's a handheld system, not intended to be anyone's primary gaming platform. The game is meant to be fun on the go or in public places (you know, where you're social).

Why complain about it not coming to PSP? The DS has been more successful. The gaming industry is business like everything else.

So stop acting it like it's supposed to compare to GTA IV, because it's NOT.

Ooh I'm kind of excited, hope this isnt another letdown like IV.

Lets hope they can make this as good as lcs or vcs was!

It will never be as good as LCS or VCS, this is a cash in, they are milking the GTA name, they said last year tehy had no intentions of making a GTA on a Nintendo platform, looks like Rockstar swooned to money so idiot fans will buy it anyway regardless of how bad it is.

Why are you so angry? Be angry after you see if the game blows or not.

Here are my general first thoughts.

The announcement was a huge shock to me. Coming home from work and seeing GTA: Chinatown Wars announced was not something I expected. The name at first seems very, hope this doesn't sound too harsh, but weird for a GTA game, however if you compare it to the stories' series, it actually sounds relatively "normal(?)". Like LCS was stories in Liberty City, and the same VCS, this game will be about wars among triad gangs (kind of another way of saying stories I suppose).

Being the 3rd GTA on any Nintendo platform, though appears it will be something much "bigger" and more true than GTA: Advance (and don't forget GTA2 on GBC), we can only imagine what kind of experience GTA: CTW will bring us. At this day in age, a top down, 2D view would seem odd for GTA, but can the DS support a true 3D GTA experience? I'm not all too informed on the technical capabilities of the DS, but as far as I know, technically speaking it's not as capable as the PSP, and in comparison to the PSP titles would consist of lower poly models, lower texture resolutions, decreased draw distance, and possibly lower framerate (this depends on too much information that is unknown to really know for sure). So if the game is in 3D, don't be too disappointed if it doesn't meet your expectations of being equivalent in every which way to that of the PSP titles. Expect a general decrease in all visuals, and at average to run as well as the the stories' games did on PSP.

I'm expecting the HUD, including weapon selection, time, money, and map to be displayed on the bottom DS screen, filled entirely by the map, while the primary screen will display the character and scenery.

I'm also thinking WiFi multiplayer will be integrated into the game, since the DS is known well for its WiFi capabilities, which should be good fun.

Only time will tell for sure what's in store with Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, but I am sure it will provide a unique and enjoyable experience.

I'm pretty sure sometime within the next 4 months I'll be picking up a DS Lite for this.

By the way, don't think of Rockstar as a sellout for this one. The way I see it, this is a placeholder, something to keep us busy, similarly to the stories' series on PSP, for something even bigger to come possibly in the next year or so. Don't forget the possibility of this game being ported to maybe.. the Wii, later on (just like how LCS and VCS were "exclusive" to the PSP.

As I said in my last post, I'm gonna quote it,

And looking at the announcement it looks like it's going to be an RPG game. I think, you control a whole group of triads or something, and you do missions in Liberty City and that's how the "touch screen is used to navigate" around the city and stuff. It'll most probably be in 3D and another 2D screen in the secondary screen and map controls and such.

As a chinese myself, it'll good to see how they will portay the Chinese people, however. Perhaps Jet Li or Jackie Chan as the voice actor for some character? When they did not use the chinatown portion of Liberty City in GTA IV, I knew something like this was gonna happen...

I think it'll be an RPG game with mixed 3D/2D?

In my opinion, its going to be top-down but it would be amazing if it was going to be 3D.

Slim, congrats, you've played right into Rockstars and Nintendos plan "I'm pretty sure sometime within the next 4 months I'll be picking up a DS Lite for this." That's what they want you to do and Nintendo knew this when they waved a bunch of notes in front of Rockstars face to get them to jump along and work on a console they once said they had no intention of working with, funny how some cash can make Rockstar change their minds soo quickly, maybe the GTA series could of been killed off if Jack Thompson gave them a briefcase of cash?

Grand Theft Auto 64
Also known as: GTA 64

This planned Nintendo 64 installment in the GTA series was cancelled before it was ever shown publicly. The game reportedly a port of the PlayStation original with significant additions in the vein of souped-up graphics and added levels and characteristics.

Here is the info
Welcome to Grand Theft Auto.

The Game
Rockstar isn't releasing much on the Nintendo 64 version of Grand Theft Auto, except to say that it's not the sequel or an add-on pack. IGN64 has learned that the game, though essentially a port of the PlayStation original, will feature significant additions in the vein of souped-up graphics and added levels and characteristics.

In the title, players take on the role of a thief who must complete various objectives set forth by his contractors. Armed with a gun and quick wits, players must strategically make their way around the city, stealing, car-jacking and killing if needs be, all the while avoiding the cops. Like so many DMA Design titles, GTA enables players the option to jump from vehicle to vehicle -- and every vehicle features different attributes. The game is heavy on violence and light on morals, just the way you like it.

GTA takes place in a top-down quasi-2D view. Players are treated to a bird's-eye angle of the action, displaying large portions of the city. This works to warn players of oncoming dangers or opportunities. Unfortunately, the PlayStation version of the game, employing the same view, had quite a few bugs -- surrounding buildings, for example, would often clumsily block a player's view.

Though the Nintendo 64 incarnation of the game is still a ways off, a few important questions have already been raised, and unfortunately, we still don't have the answers. First, will Nintendo censor the game? The PlayStation version of GTA was extremely violent, but even more, it boasted some incredibly foul language -- a Nintendo no-no. And second, just how enhanced will the game be? The PlayStation version featured jerky framerates and a lot of gameplay glitches, and as far as top-down action-shooters go, it wasn't exactly the prettiest of titles.

Outlook: With the sequel to Grand Theft Auto already on the way, Nintendo 64 owners shouldn't be made to settle for last year's hand-me-down. If DMA and Rockstar release an updated, enhanced take on the original, the title could go a long way, and it's certainly a strong step in the right direction in terms of more mature games for the console.

Trust me man, I haven't fallen into anything. At the moment I'm fairly optimistic about this game and curious to see how it will play. I wouldn't go into this blind, aka, I can better judge when more information is released along with media such as screenshots or even trailers.

I really think it's too early to judge the game or Rockstar at that matter, so let's wait a few months and see what we can learn first.

Oh yeah! I forgot about this one! It was for N64, creatively titled Grand Theft Auto 64, but yeah, cancelled.

Ash, chill dude.

It's just a video game. And you honestly can't say if it sucks or not until you actually play it.

Right now, anything and everything is speculation. It may suck, it may not. Yes, Rockstar are selling out? All companies do that. Their main aim from the beginning has been to make money.

They are no more noble than any other company.

I remember that too. It still even has a spot on the list of N64 games on GameFAQ's.com iirc.

Also, whatever happened to that GTA3 remake for the NES that one dude was making? I remember it being on the news before I registered. GrandTheftTendo or something...

this is what GTAIII would look like on a 8bit console
http://forevergeek.com/images/grandtheftendo.gif

“Grand Theftendo”:http://www.grandtheftendo.com/ is a port of Grand Theft Auto III for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It is Grand Theft Auto III running on an 8 bit, 256×240 resolution, 2 bit colour x 2 bit palette, 1.79 Mhz system, written entirely in 6502 Assembly Language! It includes the entire Portland city!

Unbelievable! Brian is porting the entire Portland City from Grand Theft Auto III (the PS2 version) into a homebrew game that runs on the original NES. All of the original missions from the PS2 version of GTA III will be included as well. He wrote his own compiler, map editor, graphics tool, a road editor, a message editor, and a bunch of other tools

He drew the entire map on paper before finally drawing the entire thing pixel by pixel on the computer.

It’s already been in development for 2 years, solely in the free time of one person, Brian Provinciano. There is no release date, but from the screenshots it looks like it’s coming along nicely. I assume you’ll be able to play it with an NES emulator once it’s finished. I can’t wait

And here is a fake Image of the Boxset

Ash you took the words out of my mouth. I mean how dare people assume that companies and people change right? The last three nintendo games weren't that stellar (because I expect my portable games to play like my home console, just smaller!) so obvious this one's gonna suck. I mean history hasn't changed much. I go to work on horseback and forge stuff on an anvil! So Rockstar can't possibly have learned their lesson. They possibly couldn't be making a good game for the DS to utilize it's unique control scheme. Besides! How dare they make creative control schemes! I want to play the same game I've been playing for the past 7 years by just hitting buttons and moving around with a few minor upgrades each time!

Wait a minute. We have changed as people. People can learn things. The DS can offer some fun potential. I haven't seen anything on the game except the logo...so how could I know that it's gonna suck? Oh wait, that was you.

In a nutshell, the DS can support 3D graphics. The DS is pretty much a portable N64, but without the support for something (I can't remember the name) so the graphics will appear a little jaggier than a N64 game. Sure the dual screens kinda suck some of the graphical power because to prevent overheating and such, Nintendo capped how much ram could be used (leaving there to be some not used). But how many screens do you need for GTA? And this problem can be capped. Remember Metroid Prime: Hunters? It had some pretty nice graphics. They only used one screen. SO! If Rockstar uses the bottom screen for mini-games, weapon/item selection and stuff, the graphics can look pretty sharp. OR! How about the top screen has a map of the city (no more pesky pause screens for it!) with the bottom screen showing the action, allowing you to do some nifty controls on the touch screen.

Need to mark the map? Pull the old LoZ: Phantom Hourglass trick and switch them around, mark, and off you go.

Personally, I think the possibilities sound cool, and I'm hopeful. Yeah, the sarcasm in my post wasn't needed, and I'm sorry. I normally like Ash, but considering we've learned nothing but a title, to go around bashing it every 5 seconds because Rockstar is being smart (and maybe creative) and 'sold out' (despite the fact they're a game company that makes games for consoles and oh the DS is a console) is pretty...screwy.

Fine I'll lay off having an opinion for a while, it's perfectly fine to bash GTA IV before it came out but god forbid bashing a GTA Nintendo game, we all know how great they were. I seriously have no interest in this game as I'm not going to shell out my money on a Nintendo DS just to get some small port of a GTA Game, I made that mistake in the past, not again. So go ahead, bash me, call me an idiot and carry on and get sucked into the propaganda wheel again and when this one sucks too I'm not even going to bother telling you "I Told You So".
