Tonyworton, if you start a thread, the burden falls on you to start the discussion.
Following that, I live outside of Detroit. It's a damn shithole. Maybe you guys don't care what Newt was saying, but all you have to do is see it with your own eyes to change that. I've been waiting for the presidential candidates to talk about how they are going to fix Michigan's economy. My dad, who worked for Ford, just lost his job of 35 years. It's nearly impossible to sell a house - almost nobody is buying houses here. People are fleeing Detroit and moving into the once nicer communities because of how cheap it's become. The roads are terrible and always have been. Detroit was once so prosperous and now it's dragging down everything around it. I went to the city where I grew up to watch the annual fireworks and it was covered with hoodrat trash.
In Detroit, big businesses are spending money to "improve the looks of the city" like the new Motorcity Casino and everything else on Woodward. But if you go 1 street in either direction off that main road, everything is shit. You can't stop at a red light without a bum coming up to your car. It's all dilapidated houses and abandoned, graffiti covered buildings. Mayor Kilpatrick is in a big scandal right now because he and his thugs blew a bunch of the city's money on themselves. This place just sucks.
And yes, I also want to know why Grand Rapids is doing so well on the west and it's so bad here on the east. Same with the north like Traverse City. It's like a whole different world once you leave southeast Michigan.

Now I live near the edge of Metro Detroit, yet I have been though the city many times. Downtown is soooooo beautiful, the architecture is amazing there. But like you said, one block away, and its a shitty place see. Use google maps, go to detroit, and click on the street views, and just look around. It sickens me to see how a once 1.8 million metropolis turns into a Below 900,000 person Shithole. Not to mention the City has gotten short in this country forever. Detroit has sooooo much potential to be such an amazing Metropolis, and yet it is clouded by the ignorance of racial differences, Greedy BusinessMen, and Currupt Politicians. What the rest of the country doesn't understand is that SouthEast Michigan has nothing left, and this country is simply saying ok to that.
When I become an Architect, that will be my goal, the the True Rebirth of Detroit. It will involve new Architecture, non currupt politicians, extremely low taxes, actraction of certain corperations, and when they come, so will others. That is the future, and maybe in a couple weeks, I will show all of you:D
25% of kids graduate high school while 60% go to jail. A greater chance to go to jail than to finish high school. That's unbelievable. Does nobody care?
