Has anyone finished the game without doing every story mission?

I get conflicting reports from people. Some say the game will start holding back mission icons on you if you don't finish other people's stuff. Others tell me that you only need to do the ones that branch forward to the final missions, introducing all the pertinent people and events. You know, like Brucie and Bernie and some of the McRearie missions don't actually lead to the end, but are kind of happening alongside. Which is true?

You can't complete the game without doing every story mission. That makes no sense.

you can hold off things like brucies missions pretty much till the end, then it forces you to do them to beat the game
at least that's how i remember it being when i did my speed playthrough...

This is like every other GTA.

You get a set of missions. You can do them in whatever order you want, but it won't keep throwing them at you until you've completed certain ones.

Perfect example with no spoilers. I kept doing missions for everyone and had one icon for Phil Bell. I went to him, did his mission, and it opened up about 2 or 3 more at once allowing me to progress the story.

Basically if it has an icon you have to go to, it's a story mode based mission. Everything else is a side job.

I say the fact that it is like that because there are several types of missions in GTA:IV, there are those of which are unlocked by saving/killing characters.
The set missions which you must compleate in order to progress the story.
The missions which you can leave untill the end then forces you to compleate them at the end to progress the story
and the missions which are story like missions but you are not required to compleate them in order to progress the story.

Actually, the assassin missions has an icon and it's a side mission.

i have beat the game 100% and the mission setup is no different than the other gta games which is brillant because you know the layout pretty well
