What do you have to do to finish the story?

I have the guide and I traced back from the final missions to see what opens up what and which missions just lead to perks instead of new required mission givers. But now Gravelli is no longer available, even though I did his first mission. I need to finish his missions to progress. I'm wondering if the game shuts you down at a certain point if you leave other missions. I didn't finish Brucie because he just leads to friendship and races. I left the McRearies early because that didn't unlock anything needed to complete the story directly. Is the game forcing me to do them?

And please just answer if you know, not just say yes because you did all the missions and it worked out. Anyone finish the story without completing everybody?

I haven't heard of this but perhaps the game is forcing you to do them before proceeding, why would you want to cut out some of the missions though?
