View Full Version : General Opinion of the Radio Stations

Is it just me or are the radio stations less prominent when compared to Vice City and San Andreas? That's not to say they're of inferior quality but they don't seem to be such a huge part, more like something to add to the ambience of the city?

Also, this may just be something to do with my console, but whenever I select Beat 107, the Jadakiss track is always playing, like the station always starts at that point in the game. It's also the same with Classic, Premo is always talking to the radio listeners about some shootings and car jackings (reminiscent of the GTA 3 line "Right now, theres a car jackin' going on outside my Window" on Game Radio) It's quite irritating because the spontinaity isn't there, like it was on Vice City and San Andreas.

I would have to say the best station is The Journey as the tracks create a certain mood when driving around or driving to a mission. I find that most of the tracks add a certain tranquility to the otherwise, mad rush of the game environment.

Also, Hey I'm Will :)

Welcome, Will.

Vladivostok is my favorite station at the moment.

All the other stations seem to be full of rap and I'm not a fan of rap. I like my techaz/dance sort of music. I still got to listen to the radio stations and find out which one plays the music I like. So I still have that to do, for the meantime just Vladivostok.

GTA III has my favorite soundtrack so far because of Rise FM.

I like Journey, Electrochoc, Fusion, and WKTT. Does anybody know, does Integrity not show up until you unlock Algonquin? Because I never saw it until I unlocked Algonquin today.

Also, wasn't Lazlow supposed to be back? What station is he on?

The Journey is the best. Shame there's only like 8 different songs on it.

Vice City radio was, and always will be the best in my view. I was very disappointed that Flashback or Flash FM didn't return, but I guess it works well with the city.

Yeah, they didnt include a Pop or "Top 40" station in the game. Wouldve been a nice touch.

Ummm, Lazlo is on Integrity. And yeah, I never noticed that station till i got to the 2nd main city section. Maybe I just overlooked it.

My favorite music station is Liberty Rock. Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh, Remedy by The Black Crowes, Evil Woman by ELO, etc. Awesome stuff.

Liberty Rock is my personal favorite, but I can't say I hate any of the stations. R* really picked some top-tier music for this game.

I love Vladivostok definitely. Each station fits the mood of the story at certain times, for example:

After you find out Michelle is a dirty rat "Evil Woman" came on the radio. I laughed and it was awesome that it happened.

At first I wasn't into it at all, but the Radio Stations are so immersive. The Radio Stations are just a part of the world, it's not like "hey look at this", it's like: "hey, this is there, it fits Liberty City, discover it at your leisure".

I was actually VERY disappointed with this soundtrack. In my opinion it is the worst out of III, VC, and SA. There are only a select FEW songs that I do like.

I'm very happy with this soundtrack. It fits the city well and almost every track I don't mind hearing again and again.

It may not be Vice City's soundtrack, but it's as close as it can get without being the 80's again.

I also don't understand how anyone could have enjoyed SA's soundtrack. It only had a few tracks worth listening to and they hardly ever seemed to be on.

Edit: The only station I hate is LCHC. But you kids are into that these days...

I'm actually very happy with the sound track, being open to a lot of new music I find myself listening to any station that usually comes on and my top three are Liberty Rock Radio (If you do NOT like anything at all on this station then you have terrible music taste), Radio Broker and The Journey. :) Well done Rockstar on creating another great soundtrack, I even find myself tuning into The Vibe every so often.

The radio is filled with awful, awful music. I wish they had retained the custom soundtrack feature so I could turn that crap off. Most of the chat shows are not as funny as the older ones too.

I can't believe you donlt like ANYTHING on the soundtrack, and how dare you call the likes of Queen, Iggy Pop and The Who awful, you sir have no taste.

^^ Yeah pretty much, Liberty Rock Radio is an awesome station and rivals K-DST (I mean Iggy and Axl, ftw!!).

Not to mention Jazz legends like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker or Dizzy Gilespie, etc. on Jazz Nation Radio.

Great soundtrack, nothing quite like speeding down the road, police in pursuit with Sick Of It All blasting out from LCHC

Radio Broker, The Journey, WKTT and PLR are amazing too

Especially the show with the judge :P

Edit: and Liberty Rock Radio only when Smashing Pumpkins are on.

I wouldnt really say the music sucks, but the choice of genres is terrible. 2 hip-hop stations 3 raggae stations? Come on now instead of putting 2 hip hop and 3 raggae, they could have put 1 of each and fit more genres. I was really hoping for an oldies station and a top-40 station.

top40 would be beat102.7, but maybe i'm wrong

I was hoping for some good alternative rock/metal, Radio Broker is 2 weak and LCHC is 2 strong, Liberty City rock Radio is in-between these two and its pretty good but i want some more modern music

There's something about listening to raggaeton, even if you don't know what there saying, it sounds cool. But Liberty Rock managed to keep some awesome music, and heck, I like all the stations.

When they said they were evolving the way the radio works, I expected a damn big collection of songs and radio stations. While this wasn't met (still bigger than any other GTA), I do notice the news reports after you do missions (which are occasionally funny) although this was also in SA to a lesser extent.

I listen to Beat 102.7 a lot because it's the only one I've bothered to listen to.

But Liberty Rock gets instant respek points for Smashing Pumpkins - 1979.

I wonder if anyone else on here has noticed the music easter egg to San Andreas? Well, THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ea30NLyza0) song was in San Andreas, and THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DLnUwUpnb8) song is in GTA IV. :)

Ash, there's a few of the original versions of SA songs on GTAIV, I've heard the one you posted, but I've also heard a couple others. A neat little touch really.

I'm pretty sure the San Andreas version is in one of the cutscenes of Dwaynes Missions, I'm pretty sure it's the Ice Cube version because in the game Playboy X said that he used to be a major gangsta in 1992 when he was out of jail, GTA SA was in 1993 and it was faster than the 1977 version.

I listen to Massive B Soundsystem and The Classics, The Classics has some excellent hip hop in it, and Massive B has got the Rasta horn sounds and stuff I'm used to, I listen to Jungle, Drum and Bass and Dubstep.

I listen to Fusion FM occasionally.

I think the soundtrack really fits the mood of the game, and thats what R* was going for. I have one major gripe with it, and R* I hope you are trolling these boards... Why on earth is the Reggae station all Bob Marley? Previous GTAs have had such awesome selections of dub and reggae, being a huge dub/reggae fan I feel very slighted. WHY? I have so many fond memories of crusing around causing mayhem listening to Scientist Rids The World Of The Curse of the Vampires... and its not like it doesn't fit the mood and tone of the game.

I think it goes well with the theme of the city. It wont obviously go as well as VC or SA because they can't pin point the classic of that era etc.

Primo's Classics channel could have been so much better, it sounds rushed and rubbish quality. But still its cool.

My favorite channels are Soundsystem B, Tough gong, Vibe. Some nice stuff on there, i dont really like a WHOLE channels stuff like the previous games though.

Ive noticed Beat does repeat some tracks, specially Swizz Beatz. I think its just an error.

I like electrochoc. However, i find i literally will just listen to whatever is on when i'm in the car. I don't really tend to change to any particular station. I think they're all good and fit in really well.

Aye, Rockstar have always done, there are a few songs on the LCS and VCS soundtracks that also have connections with each other and San Andreas.

San Andreas WAS set in 1992 ;)

The soundtrack is somewhat dry. I understand that is favours NYC heavy hiphop type genre but none of the songs really have hooks and have that, I need to mash some face now appeal

Am I the only one who notices that the radio stations seem MUCH shorter? I always hear the same interviews on integrity, and songs and interviews on other stations

That's the thing I don't like with the Dynamic engine, it gets confused easily and ends up repeating a lot of songs when there's actually a lot more available. For example, when playing pool, Massive B Soundsystem in the background only cycles through like 4 songs!

It has not the best soundtrack of the gta series, but it keeps a low profile with lots of variety, i have to go with the talk stations, they never dissapoint me, even with that childish humor and LRR has some good songs.

It's got an amazing soundtrack, i just wish they would've added more songs to the radio stations... but Radio Broker, LRR, and Electro Choc are in my opinion the best radio stations on the game.

The radio stations are alright, they do fit in good with the city. Nice one for pointing that out about the connection with the SA song, Ash. :) Vice City and San Andreas had much better radio stations though imo.

The soundtrack supervisor stated in interviews before the game was released that the songs chosen had to suit the real modern NY radio waves authentically. They had a shortlist of over 700 songs and got it down to like 220 or so in the final cut. I didn't like the radio stations when I first played but you REALLY get into some stations some real hidden gems in some of the stations at first I only listened to Liberty Rock Radio and Radio Broker but eventually I branched into Electro Choc (I hate electro music but this really got me into a whole new genre of music, Justice, Sebastian, etc), Vladivostok (even though you don't understand it its got some cracking music), K109 (filled in my Flashback/Flash FM craving with some decent disco music).

Overall you just need to branch out and listen to everything.

And I've noticed also Electro Choc always starts at the exact same point when you flick onto it. Kind of annoying. Beat 103 also does it too.

Although there are a few brilliant songs on the radios.. no one can deny it, like that song.. I think it's called shoot you down? anyway I just don't get the feel of the city from the radio stations.. I didnt get to know the DJs and many of the songs seemed not so good as much as some of them were great. I'd put the radio stations on par with LCS or vcs with better tracks then them two games but less personality.

In my opinion, the soundtrack of GTA IV can really be compared to that of VC and SA.

The Vibe was the best, and The Beat 102.7 and Classics certainly created that LC feel. WKKT and Integrity added to the "political" sector of Liberty City's culture. Vladivostok FM, Tuff Gong Radio, San Juan sounds and Massive B Soundsystem created that feel of a multi-ethnic city. And, there are 3 rock stations in the game, which I great! Radio Broker, LCHC and Liberty Rock Radio all had that nice rock music touch. Also, ElectroChoc had pretty good songs in it which are nice to drive to, and so did The Journey. Don't also forget IF99, Fusion FM and JNR, which created a unique musical feel that wasn't quite there in the past GTA games.

I also missed out Public Liberty Radio, but that wasn't really good in my opinion. Besides, there were so many radio stations on it with a wide variety of music styles and genre, which all fit into the feel of LC. I loved it as much as VC and SA's radio stations. Well done, Rockstar!
