View Full Version : PS3 or Xbox360?

Hello there,
For some reason my old user was deleted, so I made a new one in order to create this thread.
I've always been playing the GTA games on PlayStation, but I'm in doubt now. I will buy one of the systems in order to play GTA4 - but which?
I have some questions:
What extra content will Xbox360 get that PS3 doesn't?
How does the online community compares (Live is obviously much larger than PS3 Network), and will it matter for this game?
What is the achivements I've been reading about on Xbox, and what influence on the game do they have?
How much better are the graphics on PS3?
I'm obviously leaning towards PS3, but I need to get these things straight before I buy it. I do not care about other games on the systems, I'm buying it solely for the purpose of GTA4.
Thanks a lot.
Episodic content, new characters etc.
No, it won't make a difference but most fanboys still use it as defense.
I'm not sure about achievements.
Nothing too serious, just the odd pixelation apparently.

Episodic content? Elaborate on this, and if you got links, please provide me with these.
Odd pixelation? I've heard that the PS3 got better anti-aliasing and not so much pop up from environmental objects.
I'm obviously leaning towards the PS3, but I will want to make sure I don't miss out on two big factors:
The multiplayer part - this must work on PS3, and be just as good as Xbox Live.
The extra content - I need to know what I'm saying no to, if buying a PS3.
Also, what's the max resolution Xbox360 plays in? PS3 is 1080p, right?
Things like maybe a new storyline for after the main storyline, new comedy, maybe new cars and weapons
Yeah, you heard right.
Of course it does, not every PS3 player owns a headset but meh.
Both versions of the game run at 720p, with both versions also offering the option to upscale this to 1080p. Neither version is "higher resolution" than the other.
The extra content details aren't yet confirmed except one - it's exclusive to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will not be getting any whatsoever. I'd imagine it will be something like an extra bunch of missions, some cars and suchlike. It's not going to be like a sequel, just really an extension.

The game is basically the same on both consoles. If you've been playing on playstations your whole life and like the controller, that would probably be the only reason to get a PS3. If you want to play the episodic content you're going to need an 360.

There will be 2 Downloadable Episodes extra for 360, wich are AT LEAST 10 hours of gameplay, rumors tell there will be a small extra map. I think the controller is better from the 360 too, but i have to be honest and the ps3 graphics are better according to various websites, though i don't know how big a difference it is.
Achievements may seem dumb for people that have never experienced the addiction you get from it :P.. At every game you can get 1000 point's and you just WANT all of em (check my signature). Last thing is that xbox live is absolutely great, though paying for it can be a big disappointment for some people, I think its worth it though.
Max resolution is also 1080p for 360 now, but i have a samsung LE32R82B wich is HD-Ready so i can only play up to a resolution of 720p (wich is realy sharp though!)
Good look with your decision!

a- It gets 2 DLC packs that's worth around 10 hours of gameplay, first one is in August. It's probably a new, small island with new side missions/ characters.
b- Live is much better. But taking into consideration all Live users have headsets, you're bound to hear some of the worst profanity ever. Nothing you haven't experienced in a Halo game though. PS3s don't come bundled with headsets, so mostly serious players/gamers are the ones to buy them, and they're mostly mature enough.
c- Achievements have no effect on the gameplay. It's stuff like medals ( some give free points on XBox Live ) for killing 100 pedestrians in 5 minutes, finishing the storyline missions in 15 hours etc. . Think about it as your e-penis on XBox Live.
d- Both versions are similar graphics wise, with only tiny unnoticeable differences.

but remember the PSN is free whereas the Live Network is not.
when people say Live is better what are they basing that on?

PS3 version does look better, more AA (means less jaggies, more smooth cars, people etc), slightly quicker loading due to HDD install. PS3 version also has "far less" pop-in, which is great, everything will seem to stream perfectly. Also the 360 version suffers from the occasional frame rate drop more than the PS3 does. Online gaming is also free, and the controller is more native to GTA than the 360 one.
And with 360, well if you pay up, you get extra missions. In a couple more months that is. The DLC is coming in August so it is NOT OUT NOW.
So if you're deciding which game BY ITSELF is indeed better, it goes to the PS3 version, even if it is slightly, it was more than enough for reviewers to notice.

PS3
1. Better graphics (even Dan Houser has gone out and said so)
2. Free Online
3. DLC (of some sort) is also bound to come to PS3
4. Dualshock 3 (the greatest control of all time IMO)
5. Acheivement system is coming and will be integrated with Home

Very nice answers, thank you. That may very well be the reason I would buy the Xbox afterall.
I guess I'd just have to get used to the controller.
However, is there anywhere I can see a graphics comparison on the two? That's really my only major issue right now. I know people say it's not a lot, but I'm a perfectionist when I comes to that, I guess.

Who is Dan Houser, and can you link to where he said this?
The DLC for PS3 someone other in this thread said would definately NOT come for PS3. I guess at least not the same.
I agree, the dualshock controller is the best controller of all time.

Did you just ask who Dan Houser is?

Dan and Sam Houser are the CEO's of Rockstar Games
PS3 will get some sort of downloadable stuff for GTA eventually, just not the two Mission Episodes that Microsoft paid for exclusive rights to
Acievements for PS3 are in Home (the free meeting place for all PSN users, released in the next few months) there are Walls of fame and stuff

Right now the only thing holding me from buying a PS3 is the fact that Xbox gets some downloadable content.
Furthermore, weren't there for one of the consoles the ability to play mods (like on PC) in games like Unreal Tournament? Was that PS3 or Xbox?

LOL. Dan Houser, my friend, is head of R* Games. He's the mastermind of GTA. Honestly krisilcoque, if you haven't bought a console yet, I'd suggest buying a PS3, and this is not based on GTA IV alone. Sony is purportedly applying in-game XMB ( a system which makes it easier to connect with your friends online, know when they're on etc. ) in the coming months, and the PS3 is also getting it's own take on achievements, called trophies. If you're deciding which console to buy based on GTA IV, I'd say it'd be the PS3 if DLC isn't a big enough factor for you.
EDIT: The 360 doesn't support mods. The PS3 does. There are already quite a few good mods for Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3.

if you personally want DLC, then go with the 360. I, on the other hand, don't really care about DLC, i just want to play the game. I have a PS3 because i had so many problems with 360. but that is just my experience and opinion.

Also, can PS3 and Xbox users play against eachother in multiplayer?

Well we got the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack 21 days before PS3 users so I guess that counts. It might be possible that we get demos earlier too, but I'm not sure.

Well, I was in the same boat as you and went with the PS3. But I might have been a special case, as I based my decision on which console was a better multi-use platform rather than which console had the biggest game library.
Graphics wise the PS3 version is superior, and I have read several 360 users complaining about the pop-in, but this is only really important if you are a graphics whore. For me, I always hated the pop-in and framerate drops in previous GTA's, so the the PS3 version was just an axiomatic decision.
As far as the DLC, just watch out for people inventing facts. There's little that we really know, and a lot that we don't. Right now, we know that there will be two exclusive add-ons for the 360 featuring episodic content (worth around 10 hours each of gameplay). These two add-ons will be released in August and then late 2008 or early 2009, and almost certainly will have to be purchased.
When it comes to everything else about the DLC, it's all speculation. Jeronimo Barrera of Rock* has confirmed that there will be DLC for the PS3, but didn't offer up any further elaborations. No one knows yet if the exclusivity deal Rock* has with Microsoft will expire or not. Just keep these things in mind.
So finally, whatever decision you make, I'm sure you'll be impressed.

Oh well, I thought he was talking about something related to GTAIV :P. Krislicoque, if you're deciding on which console to buy, I'd suggest looking for other games that you like that are going to be released on these systems. The 360 is getting Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 later this year. The PS3 is getting Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 ( both are FPSes ) and GT5.

Indeed, XBL users often get demos before the PSN users. Sad, but true.
I've seen both versions, and it depends entirely on what games you like playing, if you play online often, what your friends are buying and if you want the DLC.
In the event of GTA, buy a PS3. The PS3 version had some problems along the way, but ultimately runs smoother. That is, unless you want the DLC. Nobody knows what the DLC is or what it will do, but it's rumored to be pretty big. If you're one of those 'I pick up GTA once in two weeks to fuck around' guys, the DLC is not necessary for you. If you're like me, a GTA Junkie, you're gonna want the X360. That's why I'm buying GTA for 360.
Online is probably better at 360, but that's only because Live has the ability to let players communicate through speech and Microsoft hosting it's own servers, thus being faster than Gamespy's dedicated servers. Live users, on the other hand, pay a small amount of fee in order to keep this streamlined application running. Then again, Xbox Live Gold users seem to have all content released one week before it's officialy released on XBL and PSN.
You should look close to what your friends are buying. If they have 360's , buy a 360. If they have PS3, buy a PS3. Or if you don't want to play with your friends, or want to play the games your friends can't play, buy the opposite.
As for titles, it's really all about what you want. If you're a shooter / soccer / race type guy, you'd best go with the PS3 (MGS, Resistance, Killzone, GT, Pro Evo). If you're more of a broad gamer, say stealth action based shooters or teamplay games (Frontlines, Saint's Row, Viva Pinata, Gears of War 2) , you're best off going for the 360.
Or like me, if you can't decide, work harder and buy both. I do play 360 more often though, but that is solely because I enjoy Saint's Row much and Pro Evolution Soccer is also on the 360.

Great answers guys, thanks a lot.
Well, I don't know what I am most. I completed all the GTA games on 100%, and after that I enjoyed the most driving around or doing things like riding out over a mountain and deploying my parachute in the last second (god I hope GTA4 got parachutes).
So, I guess I could live without the extra content in favor of the PS3 being superior in graphics and the controller is the best.
However, I will probably be proper pissed once the DLC is getting released, hehe.
Not a lot of my friends got PlayStations or Xboxs, so it doesn't really matter.

In case you guys didn't know, the 360 version of GTA IV comes with a 1 month trial of Xbox Live 'Gold'. So you'll be able to play online right away so long as you have broadband internet.
Personally, after owning a Wii, a 360, and now a PS3, I'm more for the PS3. The games I played most on my Xbox (Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, Call of Duty 4), are all also on the PS3, which is what helped me switch.
The biggest attribute that caused me to switch from the Wii was the lack of online play until long after launch (and I've heard it's sketchy anyway), and the lack of games. I had a total of 2 games that I actually enjoyed for my Wii. There are dozens for the 360 and the PS3 that catch my eye, so I lost interest in the Wii quickly, I'm afraid.
The #1 factor that caused me to switch from my 360 to the PS3 was the pure fact of customer service. Microsoft's customer support is so horrid and slow, you will want to rip your eyes out, should you ever have to call them. Immensely long repair times for my 360 that KEPT breaking, over and over (Red Ringed once, disc error three times). And the month-and-a-half long repair time really pissed me off, since Microsoft only gives you a 1-Month live card, and I was losing time quickly, since my repairs were always longer than a month.
Add the fact that Microsoft has THE worst customer support that has ever walked this earth (except perhaps Dell), topped with the fact that the the only exclusive that the 360 had that interested me was Halo 3, which I got sick of after about 3 months.
Not only that, but I'm a BIG fan of the MGS series, so that was another big reason.
I do not condone Microsoft's "joke" of a console (honestly, 4 console breakdowns in LESS than a year is a joke to me), however, if you're really looking into episodic content, the the 360 might be your better choice.
I'm almost certain that the PS3 will eventually get some form of downloadable content. Remember the old "LCS/VCS is NOT coming to the PS2!" claims by Rockstar? Sure enough, a couple months after the PSP versions were released, out came the PS2 versions.
Rockstar are sly with their claims, so even if they PERSONALLY said that the PS3 wouldn't get downloadable content, I wouldn't hold my breath to their claim.
Rockstar is like every other company on earth; they want money. They WILL expand into the PC gamer market with GTA IV, and I'm more than certain they will release PS3 downloadable content--history has proven itself.
It's really a part of personal choice. Read up on both consoles, and pick which console best suits YOU. Don't let any of these 360/PS3 fanboys detour you from your preferred console of choice. YOU'RE the person buying the console, and YOU'RE the person playing it, not them. My experiences have nearly had me ripping my hair out while on the phone with Microsoft though, so if good customer support is as much of a factor to you as it has become for me since owning a 360, then be sure to keep that in mind when making your purchase.
It may seem that I'm a Sony fanboy myself, which isn't true. I just have such a titanic hate for Microsoft, on the multiple times they screwed me over. I will never use another Microsoft product again, they can be sure of that. What makes that fact even funnier is that I switch to a Mac as my main (and like only) computer I will ever buy from now on. Microsoft has lost every sign of respect from me. I personally wouldn't mind spitting right in Bill Gates' face. Yes, I hate them that much. The only company I had to run to then was Sony, and they seem to be showing theirselves nicely in the console market this generation.
Get what you'll enjoy more. Fuck what everyone else says. End of story.

I will try not to be biased and give facts.
Graphics: PS3 is a more powerful system so expect better graphics, but nothing noticeable. Loading times may be shorter, but a feature on IGN.com called head to head has said PS3 has a longer loading times than the Xbox360 for both Army of Two and Devil May Cry 4, so I can't say. Both consoles have both positive and negative effects compared to each other but overall, not much difference.
Controls: Really depends on what your used to but due to the triggers on the Xbox 360 controller will make aiming easier and also you will stall if you pull the gas down to fast, so the triggers are ideal. Not that it is impossible for PS3 users but still harder.
Online: Xbox Live will be getting exclusive content, which includes new characters, new stories and rumours of new islands, yes exclusive. PSN is free but, you get what you pay for, for Xbox Live. Microsoft are also adding more then two times the hardware to thier servers for GTA. This may seem a bit biased towards PS3 but there isn't much I can say but it is free.
Achievements: Are points you earn to show what you have... Achieved in a game. This can range from completeing the story to killing 1000 enemies on multiplayer. Achievements really just give replay value to a game, but you can also get bragging rights for them.

Guys it's a fact, read the IGN review.
PS3 has shorter loading times, less jaggies and less pop-up issues.
360 has "better colour", whatever that means but I'm sure your TV settings can help that, it's not like the PS3 version runs black and white lol
I hate jaggies, I hate pop-ups, loading I can deal with but just for jaggies and pop-up issues being less on PS3, I would recommend that one.
And "Who is Dan Houser?"

Now I'm not a Fanboy, but having spent a least 4 hours with both versions.
The PS3 install was not very long and does reduce texture pop in.
Don't know why but there seems less weather on the PS3 version, it might be bad luck but never rained once.
The Framerate seemed far more unstable on the PS3
There is a little bit more Blur on the PS3 version, they both have it but on the 360 it seemed further away.
The streets seemed not quite as busy on the PS3, and there are far more jaggies on the PS3.
Not had the chance to go online yet so we will have to wait and see.
Myself and others have just read the IGN reveiw and can't quite understand it.Bar the slightly longer loading times and some texture pop in, the IGN review is way off and it all most seems they got it the wrong way round.
I always sit on the fence with multiformat games and wait to see which one to go for.
The 360 just seems slightly better, I was hopefull the install would improve texture pop in and it did.
Still the point is, I find it odd as do my mates that the PS3's graphics are better.
Still they proberly have spent longer on them me and my mates, I will be buying for 360.

Uncharted I thought looked lovely but most games when they go head to head the 360 has always had the edge. I see the PS3 to have a lot of horse power we have yet to see thats all and GTA in my view is not better looking on the PS3.

Yep, that's pretty much me as well. I'll end up getting a Wii before a PS3 - the reason? I have a three-year-old daughter. I can't justify the price for a PS3 when she needs things (well, maybe not needs, as evidenced by the 11 Barbies she currently has). So I think she would have a blast with Nintendo's machine and I just might get my wife into video games as well (instead of the current glazing over of her eyes at any mention of anything 360 related).
Hey, I should probably answer your question. I don't know man; it comes down to slightly more polish on the PS3 version or downloadable content that we know nothing about for the 360... That said, I'm going for 360 because that's what I have.

My little sister loves the Wii, it's a great console for kids.

Either way, it's not a bad choice.

Thanks for all the info. I'm still a little puzzled, but it has boiled down to two things really.
The achivements and the graphics. These achivements seem to be something fun to fight for, but at the same time I want the most powerful machine capable of doing the best graphics.
I'll probably end up getting the PS3. I don't like paying for the extra content either, or to play online. Have I understood it correctly that I need to sign up for Xbox Live in order to play it online?

Yes but it does come a free month of Xbox Live Gold when you buy the console. Not to forget that you will also get another free month packaged with GTA IV. So that's two free months of Live right there. Spend $20 for a 3-month card, and you'll have 5 months (almost half a year) at your disposal. The multiplayer will most likely be better on Xbox Live because the 360 console (Pro and Elite) will come with a headset and you're on a stronger network. PSN is free yes, but you sacrifice a better online store and in my opinion, a better service overall.
Achievements are good fun and there is the DLC but you will again have to pay.
PS3 version though will be better BY ITSELF but as far as how GameSpy's servers handle all the action, there could be a big difference with the online aspect of the game.
If online isn't that huge of a deal to you and it doesn't solely decide your direction of purchase, I'd go with PS3. Just make sure you have a bluetooth headset ready. :)

The game is basically the same on both consoles. If you've been playing on playstations your whole life and like the controller, that would probably be the only reason to get a PS3.
This used to be my excuse... but the 360 and ps3 button layout is IDENTICAL. Not only that, the ps3 contollers are shit. I dropped the controller once and the cheap plastic cracked. i would say get the 360...

Yeah, I am biased. I've always played the game on PS, but it seems like it's seem to switch and buy the Xbox360 Elite. It's a bit cheaper as well.
We'll see. I have yet to make up my mind.

A sidenote: I'm curious as to how you're gonna get the Achivement that involves killing a Rockstar Developer in an online ranked match.

See this is also very interesting.
Who is Dan Houser, and can you link to where he said this?
The DLC for PS3 someone other in this thread said would definately NOT come for PS3. I guess at least not the same.
I agree, the dualshock controller is the best controller of all time.
More info on the achievement system for PS3?
did u actually just ask who Dan Houser is? u needing that answer voids ur whole post, i mean dude, this is a GTA forum.....im speechless.
buy the PS3 version for reasons previously stated

If you have both a 360 and PS3 with both online services I would go with whichever one you have more friends that you will play with on. Me, I'm going with my 360 b/c of DLC, achievements (trust me and all other 360 users they're great), XBL is an overall better service (faster download speeds, better connections, more users, more DLC in general), no mandatory install (you will run out of space on your PS3 HDD pretty soon) the difference in graphics is less than negligible shown here (http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/grand-theft-auto-iv/news/gta-iv-360-vs-ps3/a-2008042812150303074/g-2006051014323586065), I prefer the 360 controller a ton better, XBL is only $50 for 13 months less than one game (definitely worth it). Also if you are going to argue that PSN is cheaper I say that the 360 is cheaper. That is why I am going with the 360 version.

The guy who said that because I asked who Dan House is it voids my entire post, I got one thing to say to you: Lol, just lol.
Anyways, I'm buying an Xbox 360 Elite, since I got a good deal on it including GTA4. I'll probably end up buying a PS3 as well at some point.
Thanks for all the answers.

Thanks a lot.
personally i gt both systems and 360 blows outa water the ps3
